As sweat evaporates from your skin, it carries heat away, leaving you cooler. This process, called thermoregulation, is essential for falling and staying asleep. However, when the rainy season arrives, it brings high humidity—an abundance of moisture in the air. When the air is already saturated with water vapour, your sweat has nowhere to go. Evaporation slows down dramatically or stops altogether. Your body's natural air conditioning system is effectively broken, leaving you feeling hot, sticky, and uncomfortable.
How Humidity Hijacks Your Sleep Cycles
This struggle to cool down does more than just cause surface-level discomfort. It actively disrupts the architecture of your sleep. A healthy night's sleep consists of several cycles, each containing different stages, including light sleep, deep sleep (slow-wave), and REM sleep. Deep sleep is crucial for physical recovery, tissue repair, and immune system function, while REM sleep is vital for memory consolidation and emotional processing. Research shows that high humidity can increase wakefulness and reduce the time your body spends in these critical deep and REM sleep stages. While humidity is the main offender, other monsoon-related factors also conspire against a good night's rest. The damp environment is a perfect breeding ground for mould and dust mites, common allergens that can trigger respiratory issues, congestion, and breathing difficulties that disrupt sleep. Furthermore, the perpetually overcast skies can confuse your internal body clock, or circadian rhythm. Reduced exposure to natural sunlight during the day can affect the production of hormones like melatonin, which governs sleepiness, and serotonin, which influences mood and alertness. This can leave you feeling sluggish during the day and restless at night. Finally, the sound of heavy thunder and the nuisance of mosquitoes can add to the disruptions.

Fighting back against monsoon humidity is about creating a sleep-friendly microclimate in your bedroom. The ideal humidity for sleep is generally between 40% and 50%. Anything above 60% is likely to interfere with your rest. The most effective tool is a dehumidifier, which actively pulls moisture from the air. Using an air conditioner also helps, as it cools and dehumidifies simultaneously. Improve ventilation by using an exhaust fan or running a ceiling fan to keep air circulating. Choose your bedding wisely; lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are far better than synthetics at allowing heat and moisture to escape. Taking a lukewarm shower before bed can also help. It might seem counterintuitive, but as the water evaporates, it helps cool your skin, and the subsequent drop in body temperature can signal your brain that it’s time to sleep. Finally, consider placing moisture-absorbing products like rock salt in bowls around the room as a low-cost, natural way to help manage dampness.
