Astronomical seasons are based on the Earth's position relative to the Sun, beginning with the equinoxes and solstices. Meteorological seasons, on the other hand, are based on the annual temperature cycle and are divided into clean, three-month blocks. For consistency in climate data tracking, meteorological autumn in the Northern Hemisphere always includes September, October, and November.
