Understanding Bank Holidays in India
Before diving into the dates, it's important to understand that bank holidays in India fall into different categories. There are national holidays, when all banks across the country are closed. Then there are regional holidays, which are specific to certain
states due to local festivals and observances. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) publishes a calendar each year, but holidays can vary from state to state. Additionally, all banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, as well as on all Sundays.
Nationwide and Major Regional Holidays in October 2026
October begins with a major national holiday. On Friday, October 2, all banks in India will be closed for Gandhi Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The festive season brings a series of closures later in the month. The Dussehra and Durga Puja celebrations will cause banks to be shut on different days in various states. The main holiday for Dussehra (Vijaya Dashami) falls on Tuesday, October 20, and will be observed in most states across the country, with a few exceptions like Manipur and Sikkim. Other related holidays like Maha Navami and Ayutha Pooja on October 19 will affect banking operations in states such as Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, and several others.
A State-Wise Look at Key Holiday Dates
Given the regional nature of many holidays, it's essential to know the specific dates for your state. Here is a breakdown of some key dates: Mahalaya Amavasye on October 10 will be a holiday in places like Bengaluru and Kolkata. Maha Saptami on October 17 is a holiday primarily in Tripura. The Durga Puja festivities mean additional holidays from October 19 to October 23, especially in West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Sikkim. Later in the month, October 26 is a holiday in several northern states for Maharishi Valmiki's Birthday and in some eastern states for Lakshmi Puja. Karva Chauth on October 29 will see banks closed in Shimla, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's Birthday on October 31 will be a holiday in Ahmedabad.
Weekend Closures to Keep in Mind
Beyond the festival calendar, standard weekend closures will also affect branch accessibility. The second Saturday of the month falls on October 10, and the fourth Saturday is on October 24. On these days, all banks across the country will be non-operational. Combined with the regular Sunday closures on October 4, 11, 18, and 25, these dates add to the total number of days when you cannot visit a branch. This makes advance planning for any physical banking needs even more important.
How to Manage Your Money During Bank Holidays
While physical bank branches will be closed, it doesn’t mean your financial activities have to come to a complete standstill. Digital banking services are designed to function 24/7. You can continue to use UPI for payments, access mobile and internet banking for fund transfers, and check your account details. ATMs will also remain operational for cash withdrawals, though it is a good idea to withdraw sufficient cash ahead of a long series of holidays to avoid any potential shortages at high-traffic machines. Services like cheque clearing and loan processing, however, will be delayed as they require manual processing at bank branches. Therefore, deposit any cheques well in advance of the holiday period to ensure they are credited on time.
