What Is 'Barely-There' Beauty?
This isn't about going completely makeup-free. Instead, the 'barely-there' or 'skinimalism' trend is a minimalist approach focused on enhancing, not hiding, your natural skin. It involves using lightweight products like skin tints, tinted moisturisers,
sheer concealers, and serum foundations. The goal is to even out tone and add a touch of polish while allowing real skin texture—including freckles, pores, and minor imperfections—to remain visible. Unlike the heavy contouring and baking techniques that dominated the 2010s, this look is defined by its fresh, breathable, and authentic finish.
A Reaction Against Filtered Perfection
For years, social media feeds were filled with an aesthetic of flawless, poreless perfection, often achieved with heavy product layering and digital filters. Gen Z, having grown up in this highly curated digital world, is now pushing back. This generation is championing authenticity and rejecting the pressure to look perfect all the time. The embrace of minimal makeup is a direct rebellion against the unrealistic beauty standards set by the “Instagram face.” They are choosing to celebrate real skin, texture and all, as a form of self-acceptance. This shift is so significant that only 6% of Gen Z report wearing makeup daily, treating it as a tool for self-expression on special occasions rather than a daily necessity.
Skincare Is the New Foundation
A huge driver of this trend is the 'skin-first' philosophy. Gen Z is more educated about skincare than any generation before, thanks to accessible information from dermatologists and experts on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. They understand ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide and prioritize the health of their skin barrier. The focus has shifted from covering up skin issues to actively treating them. As a result, many now prefer makeup products infused with skincare benefits—formulas that hydrate, soothe, and protect. When your skin is healthy and well-cared-for, there's less of a need or desire for heavy foundation.
The Rise of the 'Clean Girl' Aesthetic
Popularised on TikTok, the 'clean girl' aesthetic embodies this minimalist ethos. It's a polished yet seemingly effortless look characterised by glowing skin, groomed brows, flushed cheeks, and glossy lips. This look is achieved with multi-use products like cream blushes and lip tints that save time and money. The 'clean girl' isn't just about makeup; it's a lifestyle that projects wellness and simplicity. In India, celebrities like Alia Bhatt and Kiara Advani are often seen championing this fresh, dewy, and minimal makeup style, further popularising it among young audiences.
Practicality and Sustainability Matter
Beyond the aesthetics, there are practical reasons for this shift. A minimal routine is faster, more comfortable to wear, and often more budget-friendly as it requires fewer products. This is especially true in India, where hot and humid climates can make heavy makeup feel suffocating. Lightweight formulas are simply more practical. Furthermore, Gen Z is an eco-conscious generation. Using fewer, often multi-purpose, products aligns with values of sustainability by reducing packaging waste and overall consumption. They prefer to invest in quality over quantity, choosing brands that are transparent about their ingredients and ethical practices.
