The New Festive Wishlist
This year's festive shopping season in India is painting a new picture of consumer priorities. While the joy of gifting and personal buys remains, the focus has sharpened considerably. Instead of accumulating smaller, impulsive items, households are channelling
their budgets towards significant, practical upgrades. The trend shows a clear preference for high-utility goods that enhance daily life. According to industry leaders, demand is surging for premium home and kitchen appliances. This includes larger capacity refrigerators of 450 litres and above, high-capacity washing machines (10-12kg), and smart, connected devices that offer greater convenience. Electronics are also a major focus, with a distinct move towards premium products. Consumers are opting for large-screen televisions with advanced display technologies and performance-driven features that cater to both entertainment and gaming needs. This shift indicates a market that is not just spending, but investing in home infrastructure.
From Splurge to Substance
So, what's driving this move from spontaneous splurging to calculated substance? Several factors are at play. A primary driver is a change in lifestyle, with many people continuing to spend more time at home. This has placed a greater emphasis on the quality and functionality of the home environment. As a result, shoppers are prioritising products that offer long-term value and durability. According to a YouGov India report, while budgets may be steady, choices are sharpening, with 49% of shoppers picking products based on quality first, and price second. This indicates a more discerning buyer who is willing to invest in an appliance or gadget that will last. The trend is less about an immediate festive treat and more about a strategic upgrade that will serve the family for years to come. This quest for value is seen even in smaller appliance categories, where items like air fryers and coffee makers are moving from niche lifestyle products to daily-use essentials.
Economic Caution and Smart Financing
While the desire for premium products is strong, it's paired with a sense of economic caution. Some recent surveys suggest a slight dip in overall festive spending projections for 2026 compared to the previous year, with many households planning to be more deliberate with their purchases. This doesn't mean they aren't buying; it means they are making their money work harder. To bridge the gap between aspiration and affordability, consumers are increasingly turning to smart financing options. The use of No-Cost EMI (Equated Monthly Instalments) has seen a significant rise, enabling households to acquire high-value items without bearing the full cost upfront. This financial tool has become a key enabler of the premiumisation trend, allowing buyers to choose better technology and more durable goods. Appliance manufacturers and retailers have noted this, widely promoting financing schemes to support the demand for upgrades despite recent price hikes in the sector due to rising material costs.
How Retailers and Brands Are Responding
Retailers and brands have been quick to adapt to this evolving consumer mindset. Marketing campaigns and festive deals are heavily focused on large appliances and the latest technology. Companies are highlighting features like energy efficiency, smart connectivity, and larger capacities, which align with the consumer's search for utility and long-term value. E-commerce platforms and physical stores are also expanding their reach beyond metro cities, recognising that the demand for premium goods is growing rapidly in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns. Several appliance brands have expanded their retail footprint in smaller cities to allow customers to experience premium products firsthand before buying. This strategy of 'democratising' access to premium technology, combined with attractive financing and exchange offers, has been crucial in catering to a customer base that is well-informed and looking for tangible benefits from their festive spending.
