A Landmark Connection to the Valley
For decades, reaching Kashmir meant either braving the unpredictable National Highway 44 by road or relying on flights, both of which were often disrupted by weather. The introduction of the Vande Bharat service has revolutionised travel to the region.
This all-weather train provides a reliable, safe, and comfortable alternative, cutting the daunting 8-11 hour road journey from Jammu to Srinagar to under five hours. The service, which began connecting Katra to Srinagar in mid-2025, was extended to Jammu Tawi in April 2026, establishing a direct link. Due to overwhelming demand and full occupancy on the initial trains, Indian Railways has already approved a third Vande Bharat Express for this route, a testament to its immediate success and popularity among travellers.
Route, Schedule, and Timings
The Vande Bharat Express operates between Jammu Tawi and Srinagar, with key halts that are destinations in their own right. The primary route includes stops at Martyr Captain Tushar Mahajan (Udhampur), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Reasi, and Banihal before reaching Srinagar. As an example of the schedule, train number 26401 departs from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM and arrives in Srinagar at 11:10 AM. For the return journey, train 26402 leaves Srinagar at 2:00 PM, reaching Jammu Tawi by 6:50 PM. These services run six days a week, with no service currently scheduled on Tuesdays. With multiple services now active and a third on the way, travellers have more flexibility than ever. However, it is always recommended to check the latest schedule on the official IRCTC portal before booking.
An Engineering Marvel Through the Himalayas
The journey itself is as spectacular as the destination. The train travels on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a project celebrated as an engineering marvel. Passengers are treated to breathtaking views as the train crosses the Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, towering 359 metres above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. Another highlight is the Anji Khad Bridge, India's first cable-stayed railway bridge. The route also passes through numerous tunnels, including the T-50, which at nearly 12.8 km is one of the longest in the country. These specially designed Vande Bharat trains are equipped for winter conditions, ensuring year-round connectivity.
Fares and How to Book Your Ticket
Travelling to Kashmir by Vande Bharat is not only faster but also significantly more economical than flying. The fares are divided into two classes: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). A ticket for the AC Chair Car typically costs between ₹715 and ₹880, while the more spacious Executive Chair Car fares range from ₹1,320 to ₹1,515. These prices generally include catering charges. Given the high demand, it is advisable to book tickets well in advance. Booking is straightforward and can be done through the official IRCTC website or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. Simply enter your origin (e.g., Jammu Tawi - JAT) and destination (Srinagar - SINA), select your travel date, choose the Vande Bharat service, and complete the payment.
The Onboard Experience and Final Stretch
The Vande Bharat Express is known for its comfort and modern amenities. Passengers can expect airline-style reclining seats, large windows for panoramic views, onboard catering, and clean, well-maintained coaches. The Executive Chair Car offers rotating seats, allowing travellers to always face the direction of the stunning scenery. Once you arrive in Srinagar, a world of beauty awaits. From the iconic Dal Lake houseboats and Mughal gardens to the vibrant local markets, the city is the perfect gateway to exploring the rest of the valley, including destinations like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. The convenience of the train journey leaves you with more time and energy to immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty of Kashmir.
