When you picture cherry blossoms, you likely imagine the arrival of spring in Japan. But in the misty hills of Shillong, a different story unfolds each autumn, as the city sheds expectations and cloaks itself in brilliant shades of pink.
An Autumn Spectacle
Unlike the famous
Japanese 'sakura' that bloom in spring, Shillong's spectacle is courtesy of the Wild Himalayan Cherry tree, or Prunus cerasoides. This variety bursts into flower in autumn, typically from late October through November, triggered by the drop in temperature after the monsoon. This makes Shillong one of the few places in the world to host an autumn cherry blossom festival, offering a surreal and unexpected natural display as the rest of the country prepares for winter. The blooming period for any single tree lasts about two to three weeks, but since different trees flower at slightly different times, the city enjoys a rolling wave of pink for the better part of a month.
The Festival in Full Swing
To celebrate this unique bloom, Meghalaya hosts the annual Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st. What began in 2016 as a modest local event has grown into a major international music and cultural festival, drawing tens of thousands of visitors. This year's event has moved to a new, larger venue at the New Shillong Highland Grounds to accommodate its growing scale. The lineup often features a mix of international headliners, prominent Indian artists, and regional talent, reflecting Shillong's reputation as a music hub. Beyond the main stage, the festival grounds are filled with stalls offering local food, wine, and handicrafts.
Where to Find the Pink Paradise
While the main music festival is a ticketed event at a specific venue, the cherry blossoms themselves can be enjoyed all across the city, often for free. Ward’s Lake is arguably the most picturesque spot, where the pink-flowered branches reflect beautifully in the calm water. Other prime locations include the Shillong Golf Course, where blossoms contrast with the green fairways, the area around the Polo Grounds, and Lady Hydari Park. Simply driving the roads toward Upper Shillong or even the main highway from Guwahati can reveal stunning roadside displays, turning a simple commute into a scenic tour. For the best photographs, locals recommend visiting these spots in the early morning light before the crowds arrive.
More Than Just a Music Festival
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival is a comprehensive cultural experience. In past years, the event has included everything from guided night walks under illuminated cherry trees to fashion shows, rock concerts, and traditional Khasi dance performances. Visitors can also participate in amateur golf tournaments, sample local fruit wines, or join storytelling sessions featuring regional folklore. The blend of modern music with deep-rooted local culture makes it a unique draw. Food stalls are a major attraction, serving up Meghalayan specialities like Jadoh (a meat and rice dish) and smoked pork, giving tourists a true taste of the Khasi hills.
Planning Your Autumn Trip
The most common way to reach Shillong is by flying into Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), Assam, which is about a three to four hour drive away. From Guwahati, you can hire a taxi or take a bus. Shillong's own airport at Umroi (SHL) has limited connectivity. Given the festival's popularity, it is wise to book accommodation well in advance. November weather in Shillong can be crisp and cool, especially in the evenings, so dressing in layers is recommended. While the festival dates are fixed for November 20–21, the peak bloom can vary slightly each year, so arriving a few days earlier might increase your chances of seeing the trees at their absolute best.
