An Engineering Marvel Comes Alive
The Konkan Railway, which connects Mumbai with Mangaluru, is widely regarded as one of India's most scenic train routes. This engineering marvel, with its 2,000 bridges and 91 tunnels, carves its way through the formidable Sahyadri mountains, offering
breathtaking views. While beautiful year-round, the route undergoes a dramatic transformation during the monsoon months from June to September. The landscape erupts into a vibrant, near-fluorescent green, and the rain feeds countless seasonal streams and waterfalls that cascade down the hillsides, creating a truly magical experience for travellers.
All Aboard the Mandovi Express
The Mandovi Express (10103) is a daily train that runs from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to Madgaon in Goa. Departing in the morning, it offers a day-long spectacle of the Konkan's monsoon beauty. The journey, which takes approximately 14-15 hours during the monsoon due to a special timetable with reduced speeds for safety, is as much the destination as Goa itself. The train is also renowned for its onboard catering, with pantry staff serving a variety of hot snacks and meals, from vada pav to biryani, making it a culinary journey as well.
A Symphony of Waterfalls
As the train chugs south from Mumbai, leaving the urban sprawl behind, the scenery quickly shifts to lush paddy fields, dense forests, and swollen rivers. The real show begins as the train navigates the ghat sections. Keep your eyes peeled, as every turn can reveal a new waterfall. Some are delicate silver ribbons trickling down black rock, while others are powerful torrents crashing into the valleys below. The stretch between Sangmeshwar and Ratnagiri is particularly noted for its numerous waterfalls that appear just feet away from the tracks as the train passes through tunnels and over viaducts.
The Grand Finale: Dudhsagar Falls
Though not directly on the Mandovi Express route to Madgaon, no discussion of monsoon rail journeys in this region is complete without mentioning Dudhsagar Falls. This majestic four-tiered waterfall, whose name translates to "Sea of Milk," is located on the Goa-Karnataka border. To witness it, one must take a train on the Vasco da Gama to Londa route, which crosses directly in front of the falls on a picturesque stone bridge. During the monsoon, the falls are at their most powerful and spectacular. Many travellers plan a separate leg of their journey from Madgaon or Kulem to experience this iconic view, as it remains one of the most breathtaking sights accessible by Indian Railways.
Tips for the Best Experience
To make the most of your waterfall journey, a little planning goes a long way. When travelling from Mumbai to Goa, try to book a seat on the left side of the train for better views of the valleys and waterfalls. For the return journey, the right side is preferable. Keep your camera ready at all times, as the best views appear and disappear in a flash. Packing some light rain gear and sturdy footwear is advisable, especially if you plan to stand near the open doors for a better view (while exercising extreme caution). Finally, book your tickets well in advance, as this is a popular route, especially during the peak monsoon season.
