Why These Special Trains Are Essential
Every year, millions of people travel back to their hometowns to celebrate with family, causing a massive surge in demand for train tickets. Regular services get booked out months in advance, leaving many stranded. To clear this extra rush, various zones
of Indian Railways, including Central, Northern, and Southern Railways, introduce 'Festival Special' trains. For 2026, over 400 services by Central Railway and over 1,000 trips by North Central Railway have been announced to run between October and November. These trains connect major cities with destinations across states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, ensuring more people can get a confirmed ticket for their journey home.
Key Routes Announced for October 2026
Railway zones have announced multiple services on high-demand routes. Central Railway is running 418 special services, connecting Mumbai and Pune with destinations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and southern states. Key routes include weekly specials between CSMT Mumbai and Chennai, Nagpur, and Kolhapur. Services are also running from Mumbai to Latur, Gorakhpur, and Banaras. Similarly, Northern Railway has announced services connecting Delhi with Varanasi and Ayodhya Cantt, as well as Chandigarh with Patna. In the south, special trains will link Chennai with Kollam in Kerala, and Bengaluru with Kanpur. These trains cater to the heavy traffic moving towards eastern and northern India for Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath Puja.
How to Find and Book Special Trains
Finding these trains is the first step. They often have train numbers starting with '0' or '8'. The best place to look is the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or the IRCTC Rail Connect app. When searching for trains, these special services will appear alongside regular ones. Bookings for most of these 2026 festival trains opened in late September. You can book tickets through the IRCTC platform, at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters at major stations, or via authorised mobile apps. Be aware that these trains often run with 'special charges', meaning the fares might be slightly higher than usual.
Tips for Securing a Confirmed Ticket
With demand being incredibly high, tickets for special trains get booked within minutes of the window opening. To increase your chances, be prepared. Use the 'Master List' feature on the IRCTC website to save passenger details in advance, which saves crucial time during booking. Keep your payment details, like UPI or wallet information, ready for a fast checkout. If you find your desired train is already on a waitlist, don't lose hope. Check the availability for a few days before or after your planned date, as flexibility can often lead to a confirmed seat. Also, keep an eye on announcements for 'clone' trains on the same route, which are sometimes introduced if the waitlist on a special train becomes too long.
Your Travel Checklist for a Smoother Journey
Once you have your ticket, a little planning can make your journey more comfortable. Festival trains are often crowded, so it is wise to travel with as little luggage as possible. Arrive at the station well in advance, as platforms can be very busy and subject to last-minute changes. For real-time updates on your train's schedule, platform number, and running status, use the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app. Always travel with a valid ticket and a government-issued ID.
