What is the New Platform?
Indian Railways has started replacing its decades-old reservation system with a next-generation, cloud-based platform. Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), this new PRS is a significant technological leap designed to handle
the massive and ever-growing demand for train tickets in India. The transition, which began in August 2026, involves gradually moving train booking services to this more powerful and resilient infrastructure. While the front-end IRCTC website got a facelift with a beta launch in July, this backend upgrade is the engine powering the whole operation.
A Leap in Speed and Scale
The headline feature of the new system is its immense capacity. The old platform could process about 32,000 ticket bookings per minute. The new system boosts this capacity nearly five-fold, designed to handle over 1.5 lakh bookings per minute. It’s not just about booking; the capacity for passenger enquiries—like checking PNR status or seat availability—is set for a tenfold increase, from 4 lakh to over 40 lakh enquiries per minute. This massive upgrade is a direct response to the fact that nearly 89% of all reserved tickets are now booked online, a volume that requires a more robust system.
How This Affects Your Booking Experience
For passengers, this upgrade promises a smoother, faster, and more reliable booking process. The increased capacity is expected to make the high-stress Tatkal booking window less of a lottery, with early data from the beta website already showing a 5% improvement in bookings completed within the first three minutes. The new system will also work with a redesigned, multilingual IRCTC website that has a cleaner interface, fewer steps to book a ticket, and clearer visibility of seat availability across different classes. The aim is to reduce website slowdowns, payment failures, and booking errors, especially during peak hours.
Navigating the Transition Phase
The rollout is being handled in phases to minimize disruption. You don't need to do anything drastic, as the old system won't be shut down overnight. Indian Railways is testing the new platform under various traffic loads before fully migrating services. However, when you first log into the new beta website, you will be required to complete a one-time verification of your registered mobile number and email address via OTPs. You cannot book a ticket on the new interface until this verification is done. This is a mandatory security step to ensure your account is authenticated. The beta website is accessible via a link on the old IRCTC homepage.
Other Key Changes to Know
This technological upgrade is paired with several other passenger-focused reforms. For instance, the Advance Reservation Period (ARP) was recently reduced from 120 days to 60 days to better reflect real travel planning and reduce speculative blocking of seats. For Tatkal bookings, Aadhaar authentication and OTP verification have become crucial to curb misuse by bots and unauthorised agents, reserving the initial booking window for genuine individual passengers. Additionally, for those booking at physical counters, a new token system for Tatkal has been introduced to manage queues more effectively.
