The End of the Instagram Lip
Remember the mid-2010s? It was the era of the ‘Instagram face’: contoured cheeks, sharp brows, and, most importantly, the impeccably defined liquid lipstick. Popularised by celebrities like Kylie Jenner and a legion of beauty gurus, this look was about
precision and polish. Every edge had to be razor-sharp, every centimetre filled with opaque, transfer-proof matte colour. It was a high-maintenance aesthetic that required a steady hand, multiple products (liner, liquid lipstick, concealer for cleanup), and a commitment to flawlessness. This look dominated social media feeds, setting a beauty standard that was as demanding as it was striking. But as with all trends, its time in the spotlight is fading, making way for a completely different philosophy.
A Rebellion Against Perfection
Gen Z, the generation that grew up with the curated perfection of Instagram, is now leading the charge against it. The move away from perfect lip lines is part of a broader cultural shift towards authenticity, comfort, and ease. Instead of striving for an unattainable, filtered reality, this generation is embracing a ‘lived-in’ look. The blurred lip—also known as the ‘cloud lip’ or ‘smudged lip’—is the perfect embodiment of this ethos. It’s intentionally imperfect, suggesting a carefree attitude. It doesn’t scream, “I spent 20 minutes on my lips.” Instead, it whispers of effortless chic, of someone who has better things to do than worry about a perfectly symmetrical cupid's bow. It's a low-effort, high-impact style that aligns with a desire for more realistic and achievable beauty standards.
The K-Beauty Connection
While the trend feels new to many in the West, its roots run deep in Korean beauty culture. For years, K-Beauty has championed the ‘gradient lip’ or ‘popsicle stain’ look. This technique involves concentrating colour on the inner part of the lips and blending it outwards for a soft, diffused effect. The goal is to mimic the natural, healthy flush of a child’s lips or the way they look after eating a coloured popsicle—hence the name. It’s a look that signifies youthfulness and a subtle, natural prettiness rather than bold, dramatic glamour. As K-Beauty products and philosophies have gained global popularity, so too have its signature aesthetics. Gen Z, digitally connected and globally aware, has readily adopted and adapted this softer, more romantic approach to lip colour.
More Than Just a Smudge
The ‘blurred lip’ isn’t a monolithic trend; it’s a versatile technique with several popular variations. The ‘cloud lip’ uses a soft-focus matte lipstick, often applied with fingers and blurred heavily at the edges for a dreamy, ethereal finish. The classic ‘popsicle lip’ uses a watery tint applied to the center of the lips, which is then blended out for a sheer wash of colour on the outer edges. A more daring version is the ‘snogged lip,’ a deliberately messy, post-kiss look where the colour extends slightly beyond the natural lip line, creating a passionate, just-been-kissing effect. Each variation offers a different mood, but all share a common rejection of the hard, artificial lines that once defined a ‘perfect’ pout.
How to Get the Look
The best part about this trend is its accessibility. You don’t need surgical precision to achieve it. The easiest method is to apply your lipstick or tint to the center of your lips and then use your fingertip to gently tap and blend the colour outwards, blurring the edges as you go. A small, fluffy eyeshadow brush or a cotton swab can also do the trick. For a true ‘cloud’ effect, apply a touch of concealer or foundation around your lip line before the lipstick to create a seamless, blurred canvas. Products like lip tints, soft matte lipsticks (sometimes called ‘powder kiss’ formulas), and creamy lip balms are ideal. The key is to avoid sharp lip liners and embrace the beauty of a soft-focus finish.
