Managing the Annual Festive Surge
Every year, the period from October to November sees a massive exodus of travellers from Mumbai, as people head to their hometowns to celebrate with family. Festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja trigger an immense demand for train tickets,
far outstripping the capacity of regular services. To address this predictable rush, Central Railway has announced a comprehensive plan involving 418 special train services. These additional trains are crucial for connecting Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur with high-demand destinations across the country, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The plan aims to provide much-needed relief and convenience for the millions of passengers travelling during this peak season.
Key Routes from Mumbai
The bulk of the special services are focused on connecting Mumbai's major terminals—Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)—with destinations seeing the highest traffic. A significant number of services are allocated to the heavily congested northern routes. Central Railway will operate 64 daily special services between CSMT and Gorakhpur from mid-October to mid-November. For travellers heading south, there are weekly AC special services to Chennai and Bengaluru. Twelve weekly AC services will run between CSMT and Chennai Beach, and 14 weekly AC specials will connect CSMT with SMVT Bengaluru. Additionally, services within Maharashtra have been boosted, including 26 bi-weekly services between CSMT and Latur, 12 weekly specials to Kolhapur, and 12 weekly superfast specials to Nagpur.
Schedule and Booking Details
Booking for these special trains began in a phased manner starting September 27, 2026. It's crucial for passengers to note the specific opening dates for their desired trains to secure a berth. For instance, the CSMT-Gorakhpur daily special (01079) operates from October 16 to November 16. The weekly AC special to Chennai (01015) runs every Wednesday from October 14 to November 18. The bi-weekly service to Latur (01105) operates every Tuesday and Thursday from October 13 to November 24. Tickets for these services are available through all computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters, the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in), and mobile apps like RailOne.
Understanding Special Charges
Travellers should be aware that these festival trains operate as 'special trains on special charges'. This means the fares are typically higher than those for regular mail or express trains. The fare structure is dynamic and designed to manage the high demand during the peak season. While unreserved tickets for some second-class coaches may be available at normal rates through the UTS system, reserved accommodations in Sleeper and AC classes will have special fares. Passengers are advised to check the fare details at the time of booking to avoid any surprises. The railway's objective with this pricing is to manage demand while funding the operation of these additional, non-timetabled services.
Essential Tips for Festive Travel
Navigating the festive rush requires more than just a ticket. First, book as early as possible. Given the demand, tickets for popular routes get sold out within minutes of the booking window opening. Second, always use official channels like the IRCTC website or authorized counters and avoid touts promising confirmed tickets. Third, on the day of travel, re-verify your train's schedule, including platform number and departure time, using the NTES app or the railway enquiry website, as last-minute changes are possible. Finally, travel with valid identification, pack light to navigate crowded stations, and remain vigilant about your belongings throughout the journey.
