Why Extra Trains Are Needed Now
The period between May and July marks a peak travel season in India. It coincides with summer holidays, the end of the academic year, and the dates for major national entrance exams like NEET. This convergence creates a massive surge in demand for train
tickets, with students often travelling long distances between their hometowns and academic or examination centres. Recognizing this annual challenge, Indian Railways has proactively announced a significant number of special trains to increase capacity on high-demand routes, reduce waitlists, and ensure that students can travel with less stress. For summer 2026, the railway has approved a record number of special trips to manage this passenger surge.
Key Routes and Services for 2026
Indian Railways has planned a comprehensive schedule of special services running from mid-April to mid-July 2026, operating nearly 908 special trains for a total of over 18,000 trips. These services primarily connect major metropolitan areas like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai with destinations in states such as Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, and Assam, which see a large movement of students and migrant workers. In June, zonal railways also operated specific trains to cater to candidates appearing for the NEET 2026 re-examination. For instance, Western Railway and South East Central Railway announced services on routes like Ahmedabad-Mumbai, Okha-Gandhinagar, and Korba-Durg to facilitate smooth travel for examinees.
How to Book Your Ticket
Booking for these special trains is straightforward and can be done entirely online. Passengers are advised to use the official IRCTC website (irctc.co.in) or the IRCTC Rail Connect mobile app. To book, you need to log in to your IRCTC account, enter your source and destination stations, and select your travel date. The website will display a list of available trains, including the special services. After selecting a train, you can check for seat availability and fares before proceeding to book. You will need to enter passenger details accurately. Payments can be made via credit card, debit card, net banking, or mobile wallets. Once the payment is successful, you will receive a confirmation, and the ticket details will be sent to your registered mobile number and email.
Understanding Student Concessions
Beyond the special trains, students should be aware of the existing concession policies offered by Indian Railways. Eligible students can avail of significant discounts on their travel. Generally, students travelling to their hometowns from their educational institutions or for educational tours can receive a 50% concession in Sleeper and Second Class fares. For students from SC/ST categories, this concession is higher, at 75%. To avail this, a specific process must be followed, which typically involves obtaining a concession form from the educational institution and presenting it at a railway reservation office. While this process can be cumbersome and is not always available for e-tickets, it can result in substantial savings for frequent travel between home and college.
Tips for a Smooth Journey
To make the most of these services and avoid last-minute hassles, planning is key. Book your tickets as soon as your travel dates are confirmed, as special trains can also fill up quickly. Bookings for these trains typically open 60 days in advance. Always carry a valid ID card along with your ticket. For students travelling for exams, it is wise to carry your admit card. Arrive at the station well in advance to avoid any last-minute rush. Given the crowded nature of travel during this season, pack light but ensure you have essentials like water, snacks, and a power bank for your devices. By planning ahead, students can ensure their journey is as comfortable as possible, allowing them to focus on their exams or enjoy their holidays.
