Why English Proficiency Is Non-Negotiable
New Zealand’s government requires proof of English proficiency to ensure that newcomers can integrate smoothly, understand their employment rights, and succeed in their work or studies. For work visas, the goal is to protect migrants by ensuring they
can comprehend safety instructions and employment contracts. For students, it’s about having the language skills necessary to thrive academically from day one. These rules are not just a bureaucratic hurdle; they are seen as a key part of a successful migration journey. The requirements vary significantly depending on the visa type, which is why simply having 'good English' isn't enough—you need to meet the specific standards set for your chosen path.
Recent Changes to Work Visa Rules
A significant update took effect from June 2026, expanding the English language requirement for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV). Previously, this rule mainly applied to lower-skilled jobs (ANZSCO levels 4 and 5). Now, it also includes many mid-skilled roles at ANZSCO skill level 3, which covers a wide range of jobs in hospitality, trades, and as community workers. Applicants for these roles must now demonstrate a basic level of English, typically an overall IELTS score of 4.0 or its equivalent from another accepted test. The government believes this change will help a larger group of migrant workers to better integrate and protect themselves in the workplace.
English Scores for Skilled Migrant Visas
For those seeking residence through the Skilled Migrant Category, the English language bar is set considerably higher. Principal applicants are generally required to achieve an overall IELTS score of 6.5 or more. Equivalent scores from other approved tests like PTE Academic (58 or more) or TOEFL iBT (79 or more) are also accepted. It’s not just the main applicant who needs to prove their skills; partners and dependent children aged 16 or over must also meet a minimum standard, which is typically an overall IELTS score of 5.0 or an equivalent. If family members don't meet this score, there is an option to pre-purchase English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) tuition instead.
Requirements for Student Visas
For prospective students from India, the English requirement depends on the level of study. For most bachelor's degree programmes, universities require an overall IELTS score of 6.0, with no single band score below 5.5. For postgraduate programmes, such as a master's degree, the requirement typically increases to an overall score of 6.5. While Immigration New Zealand itself may not set a blanket requirement for all student visas, the educational institution does, and providing proof of meeting this requirement is essential for both your admission and visa approval. Always check the specific entry criteria for your chosen course and institution.
Accepted Tests and Common Pitfalls
Immigration New Zealand accepts results from several testing bodies, including IELTS (General or Academic), PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT. Health professionals often use the Occupational English Test (OET). However, it's crucial to ensure your test is acceptable for your specific visa. For instance, 'at home' versions of tests are generally not accepted for immigration purposes; tests must be taken in person at an approved centre. As of mid-July 2026, this in-person rule will also strictly apply to all parts of the OET. Another pitfall is the validity period: test results must be no more than two years old at the time you submit your application. Providing incomplete, inconsistent, or outdated information is a common reason for visa delays or rejections.
