What is El Niño?
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern characterized by the unusual warming of surface waters in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean. Think of it as a vast pool of warm water that has enough energy to disrupt weather patterns across the globe.
This phenomenon is not new, but its strength can vary significantly. Current forecasts for 2026 suggest this could be a particularly strong event, with some models predicting a 'super El Niño' that will peak in late 2026 and early 2027. The warmer the water, the more it alters atmospheric circulation, affecting everything from rainfall in India to temperatures in North America.
The Monsoon-El Niño Connection
The Indian monsoon is a complex system driven by temperature differences between the land and the sea. El Niño disrupts this delicate balance. The warming of the Pacific Ocean can weaken the moisture-laden winds that are essential for bringing rain to the subcontinent. Historically, strong El Niño years have often been associated with weaker monsoon rainfall over India. While it's not a guaranteed outcome—only seven of the 16 El Niño years since 1950 led to below-normal rainfall—the correlation is strong enough to put forecasters on high alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had already anticipated a weaker-than-usual season partly due to the expected El Niño.
Warning Signs in August 2026
The concerns are not just theoretical. As of late August 2026, the monsoon has been erratic and deficient. Rainfall between June 1 and August 24 was reportedly 13% below normal. Some early predictions even suggest the season could end with a deficit of around 15%, which would make it the weakest monsoon since 2009. While some regions have experienced heavy downpours and even floods, the overall picture is one of subdued rainfall. The IMD has noted that subdued rainfall activity is likely to continue over Peninsular India. This pattern, featuring long dry spells punctuated by intense but localised rain, is consistent with the effects of a strong El Niño.
The Impact on Agriculture and Economy
A weak monsoon has far-reaching consequences for India, where about 70% of annual rainfall occurs during this season. The agricultural sector is the most exposed. Kharif crops like cotton, soybean, corn, and pulses are at a crucial stage of development and face the risk of moisture stress if September rains fail. A poor monsoon can also deplete soil moisture, affecting the next sowing season for winter crops like wheat and rapeseed. The economic fallout extends to rising food prices, reduced rural incomes, and slower demand for goods like tractors and two-wheelers. While India's economy is now more resilient to erratic weather than in the past, a significant rainfall deficit still poses a major risk to inflation and growth.
A Paradox of Extremes
One of the most concerning aspects scientists are watching is the paradoxical nature of the rainfall. A weaker monsoon season overall does not eliminate the risk of extreme weather events. In fact, research suggests that El Niño can lead to less rain over the whole season but simultaneously intensify daily rainfall when it does occur. This can create a dangerous combination of drought-like conditions in some areas and devastating floods and landslides in others, as has already been seen in states like Kerala. This uneven distribution makes water management and disaster preparedness incredibly challenging, as authorities must plan for both scarcity and sudden, intense deluges.
