Step 1: Feed the AI Your Context
Generic practice leads to generic answers. To get the most out of an AI coach, you must provide it with specific context. Start by copying the exact job description for the role you are targeting. Then, provide the AI with your full, updated resume. This
crucial first step allows the tool to move beyond canned questions and act as a hiring manager for that specific position. Your initial prompt should be an instruction, such as: “Act as the hiring manager for this [Job Title] role at [Company Name]. I am the candidate. Based on my provided resume and this job description, ask me relevant interview questions one at a time, and wait for my response before proceeding.”
Step 2: Structure Your Practice
A successful practice session requires rules. Instruct your AI coach to ask one question at a time and provide feedback only after you have answered. This transforms the exercise from a simple Q&A list into a conversational exchange that more closely mimics a real interview. You can also guide the type of questions. Ask the AI to generate a mix of technical, behavioural, and situational questions based on the role. For behavioural questions, specifically ask the AI to evaluate your answers using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), a common framework favoured by recruiters. This structured approach ensures you are practicing the skills that interviewers are actively looking for.
Step 3: Simulate and Rehearse
With the setup complete, it is time to begin the mock interview. Treat the session as if it were the real thing. Use the voice-to-text or audio recording features available in many AI platforms to practice speaking your answers out loud. This is far more effective than simply typing them. It helps you identify awkward phrasing and where you might sound hesitant or unsure. The goal is not to memorise a script, but to internalise your key talking points so they feel natural. AI tools have unlimited patience, allowing you to rehearse without the pressure of judgment from a friend or mentor, making it an ideal space for initial, repetitive practice.
Step 4: Analyse the Feedback
This is where AI truly shines as a coach. After each answer or at the end of the session, ask the AI for detailed feedback. Go beyond asking if an answer was “good.” Ask it to analyse your response for clarity, conciseness, and relevance to the job description. Many specialised AI tools can provide analysis on your delivery, such as your speaking pace, use of filler words like “um” or “ah,” and even your tone. This data-driven feedback is difficult to get from human practice partners, who often focus more on the content. Use the AI’s analysis to identify concrete areas for improvement. For instance, it might flag that you described a situation well but failed to highlight the measurable result of your actions.
Step 5: Iterate and Refine
One practice session is not enough. The key to improvement is iteration. Take the AI's feedback and refine your answers. If your initial response was too long, work on making it more concise. If you failed to include data to support your accomplishments, edit your talking points to include specific numbers and outcomes. Run through the mock interview multiple times, focusing on your weakest areas. This deliberate practice turns your initial, messy thoughts into polished, compelling stories that demonstrate your value. Remember to keep your answers authentic to your own voice and experience; the AI is a coach to help refine your message, not a scriptwriter to replace it.
