Confirm Your Ticket Status
The first and most critical check is your PNR (Passenger Name Record) status. A 'CNF' (Confirmed) status means you have a seat, while 'RAC' (Reservation Against Cancellation) allows you to board the train and share a berth. However, a 'WL' (Waitlist)
ticket means you cannot board if it remains unconfirmed after the final chart is prepared. You can check your PNR status on the official IRCTC website, via third-party apps, or by sending your 10-digit PNR number via SMS to 139. Always check the final status after chart preparation, which usually happens a few hours before departure, to know your exact coach and berth number.
Know Your Luggage Allowance
Overpacking can lead to unnecessary fines and hassle. Indian Railways has specific free luggage allowances based on your travel class. For AC First Class, the free limit is 70 kg. For AC 2-Tier, it's 50 kg. Passengers in AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car, and Sleeper Class can carry up to 40 kg for free. Those in Second Class have a 35 kg allowance. Exceeding these limits can result in penalties, which are significantly higher if un-booked excess luggage is discovered during the journey. It's wise to weigh your bags at home and book any excess luggage in advance to avoid steep charges.
Look for Festival Special Trains
To manage the festive rush, Indian Railways often announces hundreds of 'Festival Special' trains on high-demand routes. For the 2026 Dussehra and Diwali season, numerous special services have been announced connecting major hubs like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Patna, and cities across Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. These trains are a great alternative if your preferred train is fully booked. You can find information and book these special services through the IRCTC website and app. Keep in mind that they may have special charges and their booking windows can vary.
Pack Your Valid ID Proof
A confirmed ticket is not enough; you must carry a valid, original photo identification card. The name on your ID must match the name on the ticket. Accepted forms of ID include an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, Passport, Driving Licence, PAN card, or a nationalised bank passbook with a photograph. For e-tickets, the ticket checking staff will verify your identity against the passenger list. Without a valid ID, your ticket may be considered invalid, and you could be treated as a ticketless traveller. Always keep your ID handy and safe.
Plan Your Onboard Meals
While many long-distance trains have pantry cars, the quality and availability can vary, especially on crowded festival routes. For a wider and more reliable selection, consider using IRCTC's e-catering service. This allows you to pre-order meals from certified restaurants, which are then delivered to your seat at designated stations. It's a hygienic and convenient option. Alternatively, packing your own food and water is always a safe bet. During festival travel, it's particularly important to be cautious about accepting food or drinks from strangers for safety reasons.
Prioritise Safety and Security
Crowded trains require extra vigilance. Secure your luggage with a chain and lock, preferably tethering it to the hooks under the lower berth. Keep valuables like wallets, phones, and laptops in a small bag that you can keep close to you, especially while sleeping. Be mindful of your surroundings at busy stations and avoid standing near the train doors. For solo female travellers, booking an upper berth can offer more privacy. In case of any emergency, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) helpline number is 139.
Check for Health and Hygiene Protocols
While major pandemic-era restrictions have eased, maintaining personal hygiene during travel is always a good practice. Carry hand sanitiser, and consider wiping down your berth area before settling in. It's also advisable to bring your own linen or blanket for overnight journeys for added comfort and cleanliness. Be mindful of maintaining distance where possible and avoid sharing food or water with unknown co-passengers. Following these simple steps can help ensure your journey is not just smooth but also healthy.
