Understanding the New 'Free Visa' Policy
Sri Lanka has launched a new policy effective from May 25, 2026, for travellers from 40 countries, including India. [10, 18] This scheme is often called a 'free visa' or 'visa on arrival', but it works slightly differently and is a significant upgrade
in convenience. For Indian tourists, the government has waived the fee for the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). [17] This means while you still need to get pre-travel authorisation, the process is now free of charge for a 30-day tourist stay. [3, 16] This initiative is part of Sri Lanka's strategy to boost its tourism sector, which has seen India become its largest source market. [5, 7]
The ETA Process: Your Step-by-Step Guide
The key to a smooth entry is the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). All visitors, including those eligible for the free visa, must obtain an ETA before arriving in Sri Lanka. [3, 9] The process is entirely online. You simply need to visit the official Sri Lankan ETA website (www.eta.gov.lk), fill out the application form, and submit it. [17] Since the government fee for Indian tourists has been waived, the application itself is free. [16] After submission, you will receive an ETA approval notice via email, often within a few hours. [17] It's crucial to apply through the official portal, as other websites might charge service fees. Keep a digital or physical copy of your ETA approval to show airline staff at check-in and immigration officers upon arrival in Colombo. [14]
Is It Still 'Visa on Arrival'?
While the term 'visa on arrival' is widely used, the current system is more accurately an 'ETA on arrival' for those who fail to apply online beforehand. A limited facility to obtain an ETA is available at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, but it is not the recommended route. [14, 15] Opting for an on-arrival ETA typically involves higher fees, longer queues after your flight, and potential complications if your documentation is not in order. [15] The clear advice from travel experts and authorities is to secure your free ETA online before you depart to ensure a fast and stress-free start to your holiday. [15, 17]
Essential Documents for Your Trip
Having the correct documents is just as important as securing your ETA. When you arrive in Sri Lanka, immigration officials will expect to see more than just your passport. Ensure you have the following ready: a passport with at least six months of validity from your date of entry [6, 9]; proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket [9]; evidence of sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay; and proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings. [4] It is also now mandatory for all travellers to fill out an online arrival and departure card within three days of their flight by visiting the official immigration website. [9]
Duration, Extensions, and Double Entry
The free tourist ETA grants a stay of up to 30 days. [10] A significant benefit of the new policy is that it allows for double entry. This means you can enter Sri Lanka, travel to another country like the Maldives, and then re-enter Sri Lanka within that 30-day validity period without needing a new ETA. [7, 10] If you fall in love with the island and wish to stay longer than 30 days, you can apply for an extension. These extensions must be processed in Colombo at the Department of Immigration and Emigration and will require payment of the applicable fees. [10]
