An International Effort in Orbit
The spacewalk, officially designated U.S. EVA 98, was conducted by NASA astronaut Anil Menon and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot. The duo spent six hours and 30 minutes outside the orbiting laboratory on Tuesday, August 25. For Menon,
it was his third career spacewalk, while for Adenot, it was her second. Adenot had previously made history on August 18 as the first French woman to perform an extravehicular activity (EVA), the formal term for a spacewalk. Their mission was a continuation of the work started during that earlier EVA, which saw the removal of a faulty antenna but ran out of time for the installation of the new one.
The Mission: A High-Speed Data Link
The primary goal was to replace a failed Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT). This piece of hardware is a critical link enabling high-speed data, video, and voice communications between the International Space Station and NASA's Mission Control Center in Houston. While the ISS has multiple communication systems for redundancy, including other S-band and high-rate Ku-band systems, restoring this antenna was a key priority to ensure the station's full operational capability. After the successful installation, ground controllers confirmed good power and data transmission, prompting a celebratory call from Mission Control: "You just saved the video dish".
The Technology Behind the Talk
The antenna is part of the S-band communication system, a workhorse for space missions. Operating in the 2-4 GHz range, S-band is highly reliable and less susceptible to weather interference like rain or clouds than higher frequency bands. This makes it ideal for the crucial tasks of telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C) — essentially, the fundamental 'health and status' updates and instructions for the station and its crew. The entire system, which includes the S-band Antenna Sub-Assembly (SASA), allows the ISS to communicate with Earth by relaying signals through NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS).
A Legacy of Orbital Maintenance
This spacewalk was the 283rd conducted in the history of the International Space Station to support its assembly, maintenance, and ongoing upgrades. Since construction began, astronauts have spent thousands of hours working in the vacuum of space to build and maintain the sprawling orbital complex. This particular spacewalk brought Anil Menon's total EVA time to 19 hours and 20 minutes, while Sophie Adenot's reached 12 hours and 53 minutes. The success of this complex repair underscores the vital role that human spaceflight and hands-on work play in the long-term viability of space infrastructure. After completing the main task, the astronauts secured the failed unit to a spare-parts platform on the station's truss for its eventual disposal.
