Recent data from the Department of Science and Technology's (DST) 'Research and Development Statistics 2025-26' report has brought a major structural shift into sharp focus: multinational corporations (MNCs) are the dominant players in India's private-sector
R&D. Their share of Business Expenditure on R&D (BERD) has surged to 71.3% in the 2023-24 period. This highlights a significant concentration of innovation investment within the Indian arms of global firms. This trend is part of a larger story where private sector R&D spending has, for the first time, overtaken government expenditure, accounting for 51.8% of India's total Gross Expenditure on R&D (GERD). For aspiring scientists, engineers, and innovators, this number is more than just a statistic; it’s a clear indicator of where the most significant career opportunities currently lie.
The Rise of Global Capability Centres
The primary engine behind this MNC dominance is the evolution of Global Capability Centres (GCCs). Once seen as cost-effective back-office support units, India's over 1,700 GCCs have transformed into strategic hubs for innovation, product development, and cutting-edge research. Companies like GE, whose John F. Welch Technology Centre in Bengaluru is its largest integrated R&D centre outside the US, exemplify this trend. These centres are no longer just adapting technology developed elsewhere; they are increasingly taking ownership of global product portfolios and driving end-to-end innovation from India. This shift is fuelled by India's vast and skilled talent pool, cost advantages, and supportive government policies, making it the world's front office for R&D.
What a Research Career in an MNC Looks Like
A research career inside an MNC offers a different path compared to academia or government labs. The focus is often on applied research and product development with a direct line to commercial outcomes. Roles can range from fundamental science and engineering design to project management, data analytics, and AI development. Key sectors driving this demand include transportation, which is now the single largest industrial R&D contributor, followed by pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and IT. Companies like ABB, for instance, have extensive R&D operations in cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad, focusing on automation, robotics, and industrial software for a global market. These roles often involve working in cross-functional, diverse teams on projects with a worldwide impact, offering career paths that can lead to deep technical specialisation or people leadership.
The Skills That Matter Most
To thrive in this environment, technical expertise is just the starting point. MNCs are increasingly looking for professionals with a blend of hard and soft skills. A strong foundation in areas like AI, data science, cybersecurity, and smart manufacturing is highly valued. However, the ability to collaborate effectively across global teams, manage complex projects, and communicate technical concepts clearly is just as critical. Many GCCs have evolved beyond simple execution to become hubs of strategic thinking, requiring roles like AI Ethics Officers and Data Product Managers—positions that were rare just a few years ago. Adaptability and a mindset of continuous learning are essential, as the technologies and business priorities are in constant evolution.
What About Domestic R&D?
While MNCs lead business R&D, it's important not to overlook the domestic landscape. Indian firms, particularly in sectors like auto and pharma, are also investing in innovation. However, their R&D spending as a percentage of sales often lags behind their global counterparts. For example, top Indian software firms invest around 1% of turnover in R&D, compared to a global average of 14% for top firms in the sector. The government is actively trying to boost domestic and private R&D through initiatives like the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and a ₹1 lakh crore fund to support private-sector innovation. These efforts aim to create a more balanced ecosystem where domestic firms can increase their innovation capacity and contribute more significantly to the country's R&D output.
