What is the Araku Valley Rail Trip?
At its heart, this is a journey on the Indian Railways network, specifically the line running from Visakhapatnam (Vizag) in Andhra Pradesh, cutting through the breathtaking Eastern Ghats, and heading towards Kirandul in Chhattisgarh. The most celebrated
leg of this trip is the approximately three-to-four-hour stretch from Vizag to the hill station of Araku Valley. Many travellers opt to take the train to Araku and then return to Vizag by road, as the drive offers a different but equally scenic perspective of the region. Planning Your Trip: Pro Tips
Given its surging popularity, booking in advance is non-negotiable. Vistadome coach tickets (booking code: EV) are available on the IRCTC website and sell out weeks, sometimes months, ahead of time. The train (08551) departs from Visakhapatnam early in the morning, so plan to be at the station on time. While every seat offers a great view, try to get one on the left side when leaving Vizag for arguably better valley views on the ascent. Pack light snacks and water, although there are vendors on board. Most importantly, charge your phone and camera, but don't forget to put them down occasionally and just experience the incredible journey with your own eyes.
