The Soaring Cost of a Getaway
If you've searched for flights recently, you've likely noticed the sharp increase in prices. This isn't your imagination. A combination of factors has created a perfect storm for expensive air travel. Persistently high aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices mean
it costs airlines more to fly. Simultaneously, robust post-pandemic travel demand has outpaced the available supply of aircraft, creating a classic demand-supply imbalance that pushes fares up. Geopolitical issues have also led to airspace closures, forcing airlines to take longer routes, which burns more fuel and increases operational costs that are ultimately passed on to travellers. This has affected both international and domestic routes, with some popular domestic flights seeing price jumps of over 30%.
The Great Re-evaluation of Travel Plans
The direct consequence of these high fares is a major budget squeeze. For many families and solo travellers, the flight cost, which used to be just one component of a trip, now threatens to consume a massive chunk of the entire holiday budget. This has forced a widespread re-evaluation of travel aspirations. A recent survey revealed that a staggering 67% of Indian travellers have either changed or considered changing their holiday destination specifically to find better value. The dream trip to Europe or the US, once a staple for many, is being postponed as long-haul ticket prices become prohibitive. Travellers are now looking for destinations where their money can go further, prioritising value over ticking a famous country off their list.
A Pivot to Closer Horizons
This budget consciousness is fuelling a significant trend: a pivot towards domestic and short-haul international destinations. Instead of giving up on travel altogether, Indians are creatively adapting. There's a clear surge in domestic tourism, with destinations like Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and the Northeast seeing a boom in interest from people who might have otherwise travelled abroad. On the international front, the focus has shifted to destinations that are closer to home. Countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East are emerging as the biggest beneficiaries. Travel portals report massive growth in bookings for places like Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and Bali. The appeal is multi-fold: shorter, more affordable flights, favourable exchange rates, and lower on-ground costs for food and accommodation.
Value Destinations on the Rise
As travellers hunt for value, a new list of popular destinations is taking shape. Vietnam has seen bookings more than double, thanks to its mix of rich culture, beautiful landscapes, and affordability. Thailand remains a perennial favourite for first-time international travellers due to its simple visa process and budget-friendly street food and hotels. Sri Lanka, being just a short flight away, offers a compelling mix of beaches, culture, and wildlife without a hefty price tag. Even destinations in Central Asia, like Uzbekistan, and the Caucasus region, such as Azerbaijan and Georgia, are gaining traction as travellers discover they can have a unique international experience for a fraction of the cost of a Western holiday. The key criteria are clear: easy visa processes, good flight connectivity, and a reputation for being budget-friendly on the ground.
