From Pet Owners to Pet Parents
The primary engine behind India's expanding pet care market is a profound cultural shift: the 'humanization' of pets. Across the country, the relationship is evolving from simple ownership to dedicated 'pet parenting'. This change, accelerated by the pandemic-era
surge in adoptions and the rise of nuclear families, means pets are increasingly seen as integral family members deserving of high-quality care. This emotional investment is translating directly into financial spending. Pet parents are more willing than ever to spend on premium food, wellness products, and specialized services to ensure their companions lead long, healthy, and happy lives. This trend is creating a ripple effect across the economy, moving beyond basic necessities into a more holistic and indulgent market.
A Market That's Barking Up the Right Tree
The numbers confirm the trend. India's pet care market is one of the fastest-growing in Asia. Valued at over USD 720 million, the market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 17% between 2024 and 2030. Some estimates project the market could reach a staggering INR 2,10,000 crore by 2032. This growth isn't just about more pets; India's pet population is expected to grow from around 39 million in 2025 to over 60 million by 2030. It's also about increased spending per pet on everything from gourmet treats and specialized diets to advanced veterinary care and professional grooming.
The New Frontiers: Beyond the Metros
While Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Delhi remain major hubs, the most explosive growth is happening elsewhere. Tier-2 cities have become the new hotspots for the pet care industry, with some reports showing a staggering 96% year-on-year growth in pet care orders, far outpacing the metros. Cities like Guwahati, Lucknow, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Indore, and Nagpur are emerging as key growth markets. Entrepreneurs and established brands are drawn to these locations by a combination of rising disposable incomes, growing awareness, and a less saturated competitive landscape. This expansion signifies that premium pet care is no longer a luxury for the urban elite but an aspirational and increasingly accessible standard for the growing middle class across India.
More Than Just a Food Bowl
The new wave of pet care services extends far beyond retail shelves. In cities like Lucknow and Coimbatore, pet parents can now find a range of options that were once exclusive to larger metropolitan areas. This includes professional grooming salons, cage-free boarding and daycare facilities, and specialized veterinary clinics offering everything from routine check-ups to emergency surgery. Digital platforms and apps like Supertails, Zigly, and ThePetNest are also playing a crucial role, offering everything from at-home vet consultations and rapid delivery of pet supplies to booking dog walkers and pet sitters. This integrated approach, combining online convenience with offline services, is making comprehensive pet care more accessible than ever.
The Players Fueling the Boom
A mix of national chains, venture-funded startups, and local entrepreneurs are driving this expansion. Omnichannel retailer Justdogs, which started in Ahmedabad, has been aggressively expanding its physical footprint into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities with plans to reach 150 stores. Digital-first platforms like Supertails are building an end-to-end ecosystem with veterinary clinics, diagnostic services, and a network of 'dark stores' to enable quick commerce, with plans to expand beyond their current bases in Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai into cities like Pune, Chennai and Hyderabad. Meanwhile, local entrepreneurs in cities like Lucknow are opening specialized businesses, from cage-free boarding houses to natural pet food kitchens, catering to a discerning local clientele. This diverse mix of players ensures a dynamic and competitive market that ultimately benefits the consumer.
