Documentation and Identification
Before you go anywhere, get your pet's papers in order. For any travel within India, carrying a copy of up-to-date vaccination records, especially for rabies, is crucial. Many states, hotels, or airlines may also require a health certificate from a registered
veterinarian, typically issued within 7-10 days of your travel date, declaring your pet is 'fit to travel'. It’s also wise to have your pet microchipped. If they aren’t, ensure they wear a collar with an ID tag that includes your name, phone number, and a temporary travel address or contact. Keep both physical and digital copies of all documents in a dedicated folder.
Safe and Secure Transport
How your pet travels—whether by car or plane—dictates the most important piece of gear. For car travel, an unrestrained pet is a danger to everyone. Use a crash-tested harness that clips into the seatbelt, or a secure, well-ventilated travel crate anchored in the back seat. Never allow pets to roam freely in the car or stick their heads out the window. For air travel, regulations are even stricter. Airlines like Air India require specific IATA-approved carriers, with different size and weight rules for in-cabin versus cargo transport. Soft kennels for in-cabin pets must fit under the seat, while larger pets travel in hard crates in a temperature-controlled hold. Always confirm your airline's specific requirements weeks in advance.
On-the-Go Comfort
A comfortable pet is a calm pet. Familiar items can significantly reduce travel anxiety. Pack their favourite blanket or a small toy that smells like home to place in their carrier. For car trips, a back-seat hammock or cover can provide a secure and comfortable space. When you make stops, having an extra leash and harness ready is essential for safe potty breaks. Remember that temperatures can fluctuate, so a light coat for colder destinations or a cooling mat for warmer climates might be necessary.
Feeding and Hydration
Maintaining a consistent feeding schedule can be challenging on the move, but it's important. Pack enough of your pet's regular food to last the entire trip, plus a little extra in case of delays. Sudden changes in diet can cause digestive upset. To prevent motion sickness, feed your pet a light meal a few hours before you depart, not right before you leave. Collapsible, lightweight food and water bowls are a must-have. Always carry a sufficient supply of fresh water, especially during India’s hot summer months, and use a spill-proof travel bottle for easy access during breaks.
Health and Hygiene Kit
A well-stocked first-aid kit is non-negotiable. Your kit should include essentials like antiseptic wipes, gauze, self-adhering bandages, tweezers for tick removal, and any prescribed medications your pet needs. It's also wise to have the contact information for an emergency vet at your destination. For hygiene, pack poop bags and a scooper, pet-safe wet wipes for quick clean-ups, and a towel. For longer trips, especially during monsoon season, consider doggy raincoats or booties to keep them dry and clean.
