Why Humidity Wrecks Your Sleep
The main reason humid nights feel so restless comes down to basic biology. Your body needs to lower its core temperature by a degree or two to initiate and maintain deep sleep. The primary way it does this is by sweating. As sweat evaporates from your
skin, it carries heat away, cooling you down. High humidity throws a wrench in this natural air conditioning system. When the air is already saturated with water vapour, your sweat cannot evaporate efficiently. As a result, the heat gets trapped, your core temperature stays elevated, and your brain never gets the clear signal to power down for the night. Research shows this disruption is significant, leading to more time awake during the night and less time in the most restorative stages of sleep, like deep slow-wave and REM sleep.
The Ideal Sleep Environment
While temperature gets most of the attention, humidity is an equally critical part of the sleep equation. According to sleep experts and environmental agencies, the ideal relative humidity for a bedroom is between 30% and 50%. Some studies suggest a slightly narrower range of 40% to 60% is also comfortable, but nearly all agree that levels above 60% are detrimental. When monsoon humidity pushes indoor levels to 70%, 80%, or even higher, it not only disrupts your body's cooling process but also creates a breeding ground for allergens like mould and dust mites, which can further interfere with restful breathing and sleep quality.
Improve Ventilation and Airflow
The simplest first step is to get the air moving. Even if the air is humid, circulation helps with the evaporative cooling process, however minor. Use ceiling fans or standing fans to create a breeze over your body. If the rain has stopped and the air outside feels cooler or less damp than inside, open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a cross-breeze. During the day, however, it's often better to keep windows and blinds closed to prevent the hot, humid air from entering and warming up your home.
Actively Dehumidify Your Space
An electric dehumidifier is the most effective tool for pulling excess moisture from the air. If you don't have one, your air conditioner also works as a powerful dehumidifier, so running it for even a short period before bed can make a big difference. For more natural solutions, you can place moisture-absorbing materials like rock salt or calcium chloride in bowls around the room. These won't be as powerful as a machine but can help reduce dampness in smaller, enclosed spaces. Ensuring your bathroom is well-ventilated after a shower and fixing any leaks in the home can also prevent adding more moisture to your indoor environment.
Choose the Right Bedding and Sleepwear
The fabrics you sleep on and in matter immensely. Heavy, synthetic materials like polyester or silk trap heat and moisture against your skin. Switch to lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking fabrics for your sheets and pyjamas. Cotton and linen are excellent choices as they allow for better airflow and help draw sweat away from your body, allowing it to evaporate more easily. This simple change can significantly reduce that sticky, uncomfortable feeling on humid nights.
Adjust Your Pre-Sleep Routine
A few small tweaks to your evening habits can also promote better cooling. Taking a lukewarm shower before bed can help lower your core body temperature. A cold shower might feel good initially, but it can cause your body to react by conserving heat, which is counterproductive. Avoid heavy meals and intense exercise too close to bedtime, as both can raise your body temperature and make it harder to fall asleep. Staying hydrated is important, but try to limit your liquid intake right before you turn in to avoid waking up.
