The Sneaky Nature of Subscription Creep
It rarely feels like a big expense in the moment. A small monthly fee for a streaming service, a fitness app, or a productivity tool seems harmless. But these small, recurring charges are like financial termites. Individually they are minor, but collectively
they can chew through your budget. Studies have shown that many consumers vastly underestimate their monthly subscription spending. This phenomenon, often called "subscription creep," happens because these payments are automated and easy to forget. Many of us sign up for free trials and forget to cancel before the first charge hits, leading to wasted money on services we no longer use.
Your First Step: A Digital Audit
Before you can start cancelling, you need a complete picture of what you're paying for. The most reliable source of truth is your financial statements. Take some time to meticulously review your bank and credit card statements from the last few months. Look for any recurring charges, no matter how small. Pay close attention to names you don't recognise. A quick search online can often reveal the service behind an unfamiliar billing name. Create a simple list of all your subscriptions, the cost, and the renewal date. Seeing the total monthly or annual cost in one place is often a powerful motivator to start cleaning up.
Managing Subscriptions on iPhone and iPad
Apple makes it relatively straightforward to manage all subscriptions tied to your Apple ID. This is where you will find most of the subscriptions you signed up for through apps downloaded from the App Store. To find them, open the 'Settings' app on your device. Tap on your name at the very top, and then select 'Subscriptions'. This screen will show a list of all your active and expired subscriptions. Tap on any active subscription you no longer need. You should see a 'Cancel Subscription' button, usually in red. Once you tap it and confirm, the subscription is cancelled. You will typically retain access to the service until the end of the current billing period you've already paid for.
Tackling Subscriptions on Android Devices
For Android users, the process is similarly centralized within the Google Play Store. It is important to remember that simply uninstalling an app will not cancel the subscription. To properly end the payments, open the Google Play Store app. Tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner to ensure you are signed into the correct Google account. From there, select 'Payments & subscriptions,' and then tap on 'Subscriptions'. You'll see a list of your active recurring payments. Select the one you wish to end and tap 'Cancel subscription'. Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm the cancellation.
Don't Forget Direct-to-Website Subscriptions
A common mistake is assuming all your subscriptions are managed through your phone's app store. Many popular services, like Netflix, Spotify, or various news publications, are often subscribed to directly on their websites. These will not appear in your Apple or Google subscription lists. For these, you’ll need to log in to your account on the service’s website itself. Look for account settings, billing information, or a 'manage subscription' section. This is where you will find the option to cancel or change your plan. If you're having trouble, check your email inbox for receipts from the company, as they often contain links or instructions for managing your account.
A Helping Hand from the RBI
In India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has implemented rules to give consumers more control over recurring payments. Banks are required to send you a notification at least 24 hours before an automatic payment is deducted. For recurring payments over a certain limit (currently ₹15,000 for most transactions), you must provide an additional factor of authentication (like an OTP) for each payment, preventing large amounts from being debited without your active approval. This pre-debit alert is your chance to review the upcoming charge and cancel the mandate if it's for a service you no longer want.
