While most of India settles into post-monsoon autumn, the hills of Meghalaya awaken with a second spring. A growing wave of travellers is discovering this secret season, drawn by hillsides blushing in unexpected shades of pink.
An Autumnal Blossom Unlike Any Other
Forget what you know about
spring cherry blossoms; Meghalaya's magic happens in autumn. Every November, the wild Himalayan cherry tree, or Prunus cerasoides, bursts into bloom across the Khasi Hills, transforming the landscape into a soft, ethereal pink spectacle. Unlike the famous Sakura of Japan, this bloom thrives in the cool, crisp air of late autumn, creating a breathtaking contrast against the region's lush, post-monsoon greenery. This unique timing makes Meghalaya the world's only destination for an autumn cherry blossom festival, offering a floral experience that feels both familiar and entirely new. The delicate, five-petalled flowers cluster in dense sprays, making entire hillsides and roadsides appear to glow in the clear November light.
The Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival
The natural bloom is now the backdrop for one of India's most anticipated cultural events: the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. First held in 2016, this event has quickly grown from a local celebration into an award-winning international music and arts festival attracting over 50,000 attendees. For 2026, the festival is scheduled for November 20th and 21st at the New Shillong Highland Grounds. It’s a vibrant mix of global and local music acts, with past headliners including artists like Akon, Ne-Yo, and Boney M. Beyond the music, the festival features food stalls serving local Khasi cuisine, fashion shows, art installations, and cultural performances, making it a comprehensive celebration of Meghalaya's modern and traditional spirit.
Where to Witness the Pink Spectacle
While the festival is a major draw, you don't need a ticket to enjoy the blossoms, which can be found across Shillong and the surrounding hills. Ward's Lake is a popular and easily accessible spot, where the pink-flowered trees reflect beautifully on the water. The sprawling Shillong Golf Course offers a stunning vista of blossoms against open green fairways and pine trees. For a more immersive experience, take a drive along the roads in Upper Shillong, the highway towards Umiam Lake, or even explore residential areas like Laitumkhrah, where the trees line local streets and gardens. These locations offer picture-perfect moments away from the main festival crowds.
The Perfect Weather for Exploration
November is arguably one of the best months to visit Meghalaya for reasons that go beyond the blossoms. The heavy monsoon rains have subsided, leaving behind clear blue skies, lush landscapes, and waterfalls that are still flowing impressively. The weather is pleasantly cool and dry, with daytime temperatures in Shillong hovering between 12°C and 20°C, ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. This clear weather offers uninterrupted, panoramic views from famous viewpoints like Laitlum Canyons and Shillong Peak. It's also the perfect time to visit the famous living root bridges or take a boat trip on the now crystal-clear waters of the Umngot River in Dawki.
Planning Your November Trip
Given the growing popularity of the season, planning is key. Accommodation in Shillong, especially around the festival weekend, tends to sell out weeks in advance, so booking early is crucial. For packing, think in layers. Days are comfortable, but mornings and evenings can be chilly, with temperatures dropping to around 8–10°C. A light fleece or jacket, long–sleeved tops, and comfortable walking shoes are essential. While the weather is mostly dry, Meghalaya's climate is unpredictable, so carrying a light waterproof jacket is always a wise precaution. Also, remember that it gets dark early, around 4:30 PM, so plan your day trips to start in the morning to maximize daylight.
