The Allure of an Easy Entry
For years, the dream of an international holiday for many Indians was intertwined with the nightmare of a visa application. The long forms, the extensive documentation, the appointments, the anxious wait, and the uncertainty of the outcome often made
the process more stressful than the trip itself. This 'visa fatigue' is a significant factor in the current travel trend. A growing number of Indian travellers are now bypassing the traditional Western destinations in favour of Asian neighbours who have rolled out the red carpet. Countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam are actively courting Indian tourists by offering visa-free entry or simplified e-visa processes. This move has turned the tables, making a spontaneous or a well-planned trip equally feasible, without the bureaucratic hurdles. The contrast is stark: while some embassies require weeks or months of planning, these Asian destinations allow for trips to be planned in days.
Thailand and Malaysia: The Southeast Asian Powerhouses
Thailand has long been a favourite, and its decision to offer visa-free entry has supercharged its popularity. In the first half of 2026, over 1.2 million Indians visited the country, making them the third-largest group of tourists. The policy has made it incredibly simple to access its famous beaches, bustling markets, and rich culinary scene. Similarly, Malaysia's visa-free scheme for Indians, valid until the end of 2026, has seen a surge in interest. For many Indian families, Malaysia offers a perfect blend of modernity in Kuala Lumpur and natural beauty in places like Langkawi, all with a comforting sense of cultural familiarity and easy access to Indian food. Both countries have become top-of-mind for short-haul, high-value holidays.
The Rising Stars: Vietnam and Sri Lanka
Beyond the established hubs, Vietnam is rapidly emerging as a major winner in this shift. Once considered a niche destination, its easy e-visa process, coupled with incredible value for money, is attracting Indian travellers in droves. From the stunning landscapes of Ha Long Bay to the vibrant street life of Hanoi, Vietnam offers a unique blend of culture, history, and adventure that feels fresh and exciting. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's proximity and simplified entry have made it a go-to for quick getaways. A flight from Chennai can take less than two hours, making it an easier trip than many domestic routes. The island nation offers a diverse package of serene beaches, lush tea plantations, and ancient ruins, positioning itself as a convenient and budget-friendly alternative.
More Than Just Visas
While convenient visa policies are the primary driver, they are not the only reason for this eastward tilt. Affordability plays a massive role. As travel costs to Europe and the US have risen, a week-long trip to a Southeast Asian country can often cost less than a premium domestic holiday in India. The weaker rupee against the dollar and euro makes the conversion to Thai Baht or Malaysian Ringgit far more favourable. Furthermore, improved flight connectivity and shorter travel times are significant advantages for those seeking frequent, shorter breaks rather than one long annual vacation. This trend is particularly strong among younger Gen Z travellers, who prioritise experiences, cultural immersion, and value over the perceived status of a long-haul trip. The desire for new and authentic experiences, from theme parks in Singapore to island hopping in the Philippines, is reshaping the Indian travel itinerary.
