First, Verify the New Timings
Before making any decisions, your first step is to get official confirmation of the schedule change. While Indian Railways usually sends an SMS to the registered mobile number, you should cross-verify the information. The most reliable source is the National
Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or website. You can enter your train number to see its live status, new departure and arrival times, and any other relevant updates. You can also call the railway helpline at 139 for information. This ensures you are working with the most accurate and up-to-date schedule, as timings can sometimes be adjusted more than once.
Understand Your Passenger Rights
Your rights as a passenger depend on the extent of the schedule change. If a train's departure is preponed (brought forward) or postponed (delayed), your options change. A 'rescheduled train' simply means it will depart at a different time than originally planned, not that it is cancelled. The most important rule to know is regarding significant delays. If your train is running late by more than three hours and you decide not to travel, you are entitled to a full refund of the ticket fare. This applies to confirmed, RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation), and waitlisted tickets.
How to Claim a Full Refund
If the new timing doesn't work for you and the train is delayed by over three hours, you can claim a 100% refund. For e-tickets booked via the IRCTC website or app, you must file a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) online. It is crucial to file this TDR before the train's actual departure time to be eligible. Do not simply cancel the ticket through the normal process, as that will result in standard cancellation charges being deducted. To file a TDR, log into your IRCTC account, go to 'My Transactions', select 'File TDR', and choose 'Train Late by More Than 3 Hours' as the reason. For tickets bought at a physical counter, you can claim a refund by surrendering the ticket at a reservation counter.
If You Still Plan to Travel
If you decide to travel despite the schedule change, you do not need to do anything with your existing ticket. Your original ticket and PNR remain valid for the journey at the new, rescheduled time. The key is to plan your arrival at the station according to the updated departure time. Use the NTES app to monitor the train's live status to avoid any further last-minute surprises. Be aware that a rescheduled departure can also affect your train's arrival time at intermediate stations and the final destination, so adjust any onward travel plans or inform those waiting for you accordingly.
Proactive Steps for Future Journeys
To minimise travel disruptions, always provide an active mobile number when booking to receive alerts from the railways. Regularly checking the NTES portal or app a day before and on the day of your journey is a good habit to cultivate. This keeps you informed not just about rescheduling but also about potential cancellations or route diversions. Recently, Indian Railways announced plans to allow passengers to change their journey date on a confirmed ticket without cancellation fees, subject to seat availability, which is expected to add another layer of flexibility for travellers in the near future.
