Festive offers like “Buy One, Get One Free” or bundled gift sets can be alluring, but the real value isn’t always on the price tag. Before adding to your cart, ask yourself if you will realistically use all the products in a bundle before they expire.
Sometimes, a seemingly large discount is designed to move older stock or products nearing their expiry date. Check the individual prices of the items in a combo deal to see if the savings are substantial. Scammers often create fake e-commerce sites with unbelievable discounts during festive periods like Diwali to lure in hurried shoppers. If a deal from an unknown seller seems too good to be true, it probably is. Stick to authorised retailers or the brand's official website.
Master the Manufacturing and Expiry Dates
Every cosmetic sold in India must legally have a manufacturing date (MFD) and an expiry date (EXP) clearly printed on the label. When buying in bulk, this is the most crucial detail to check. A product might be on sale because it has less than a year of shelf life left. While unopened cosmetics can last up to 30 months, their clock starts ticking from the moment they are made, not when you buy them. Also look for the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol—an open jar icon with a number like "12M". This indicates the product should be used within 12 months of opening, regardless of the expiry date. For a bulk purchase to be worthwhile, ensure the expiry date gives you enough time to use the products well after opening them.
Become an Expert at Spotting Fakes
The market is flooded with counterfeit cosmetics, especially during high-demand festive seasons. These fakes can contain harmful ingredients like mercury, lead, and arsenic. Pay close attention to the packaging. Genuine brands use high-quality printing and sturdy materials. Look for spelling mistakes, blurry logos, or flimsy packaging, which are common signs of a fake. The texture and scent are also giveaways; if a product feels or smells different from what you're used to, be suspicious. Another red flag is a price that is significantly lower than the official MRP. Buying from authorised dealers is your best defence against counterfeit goods.
Verify the Batch Code
The batch number, a short code of letters and numbers, is a powerful tool for verifying authenticity. It's usually printed or stamped on the bottom of the product or on the crimp of a tube. This code tells you the exact production run of the item. While every brand's system is different, several free online tools like CheckFresh and other cosmetic calculators allow you to enter the brand and batch code to see the manufacturing date. This is an excellent way to double-check if the product is fresh stock or has been sitting on a shelf for years. Some brands in India even allow you to verify authenticity by looking up the serial number on their app or website.
Decode 'Natural' and 'Herbal' Claims
Terms like 'natural', 'herbal', and 'organic' are often used in marketing but are not strictly regulated for cosmetics in India. This means a product can make these claims on the front of the bottle while still containing synthetic ingredients. The only way to know for sure is to read the full ingredient list on the back, which is mandatory by law. Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration, so if the 'natural' extracts are at the very end of the list, their quantity is likely minimal. Don't be swayed by marketing buzzwords; rely on the ingredient list for the real story. For a product to be truly organic, look for certifications from recognised bodies like ECOCERT or USDA Organic.
Check the Seller’s Credentials
Whether you are shopping online or in a physical store, the seller's reputation is paramount. On e-commerce platforms, always check seller ratings and read reviews from verified buyers. Pay attention to comments about packaging, authenticity, and customer service. If you're shopping from a third-party seller on a large marketplace, be extra cautious. Fraudulent sellers often set up temporary accounts for festive sales and disappear after receiving payment. To be completely safe, your best bet is to purchase directly from the brand’s official website or from well-established, authorised retail chains that provide a proper receipt.
