Cleanse Thoroughly, Twice a Day
High humidity means more sweat and oil, which traps dirt and pollutants, leading to clogged pores and acne. The most crucial step is to cleanse your face twice daily with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. For evenings, consider a double cleanse, especially
if you wear makeup or sunscreen. Start with an oil-based cleanser or micellar water to dissolve impurities, followed by a mild, foaming face wash to clean the skin without stripping its natural moisture barrier.
Exfoliate Gently, Not Aggressively
Exfoliation is key during the monsoon to remove the buildup of dead skin cells that can lead to breakouts. However, aggressive scrubbing can damage your skin's protective barrier, which is already under stress from the fluctuating temperatures. Opt for gentle chemical exfoliants containing AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) once or twice a week. Salicylic acid is particularly good for oily, acne-prone skin as it penetrates pores to dissolve excess sebum.
Switch to a Lightweight Moisturiser
It's a common myth that oily or damp skin doesn't need moisturising. The opposite is true. Skipping moisturiser can trick your skin into producing even more oil. The secret is to switch from heavy creams to lightweight, non-comedogenic (pore-clogging) formulas. Look for gel-based or water-based moisturisers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which hydrate the skin without feeling heavy or greasy.
Never Skip Sunscreen
Don't let the cloudy skies fool you. Up to 80% of the sun's harmful UV rays can penetrate through clouds, causing skin damage, premature ageing, and hyperpigmentation. Sun protection remains non-negotiable throughout the monsoon. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. To combat the stickiness of the season, opt for a lightweight, gel-based or fluid formulation that provides a matte finish.
Use a Weekly Clay Mask
A weekly clay mask is an excellent habit to incorporate into your monsoon routine. Clay, such as Multani mitti (Fuller's earth) or kaolin, is brilliant at absorbing excess oil, drawing out impurities from pores, and preventing breakouts. Use a clay mask once a week for 10-15 minutes to deep clean your skin and leave it feeling fresh and balanced. This simple step helps manage the extra sebum production triggered by the humidity.
Prevent Fungal Infections
The damp, warm environment of the monsoon is a breeding ground for fungal infections like ringworm and athlete's foot. The key to prevention is to keep your skin dry. Always dry yourself thoroughly after showering, paying special attention to skin folds. Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing and avoid staying in damp clothes for long periods. Using an antifungal powder on your feet and in skin folds can also provide an extra layer of protection.
