Understanding Abu Dhabi’s Free Visa Initiative
Abu Dhabi has launched a special programme specifically for Indian tourists. Between August 1 and October 31, 2026, the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) is covering the cost of UAE entry visas for up to 20,000 visitors. This
is not a visa-free travel policy, but rather a subsidy where the visa fee, approximately Dh285 ($77), is paid by Abu Dhabi's tourism authority on your behalf. The key condition is that you cannot apply for this offer independently. It is only available when booking a holiday package through participating travel agencies and online travel platforms. The goal is to make travel more affordable and boost tourism from India, a key market for the emirate.
Eligibility Criteria You Must Meet
To qualify for the complimentary visa, Indian tourists must meet a clear set of requirements. First, you must book a return flight departing from India. Second, your booking must include a stay of at least three consecutive nights in an Abu Dhabi hotel. This offer is tied directly to generating overnight stays within the capital, so short stopovers or stays in other emirates do not qualify. The entire package—flights and hotel—must be booked through a participating travel partner. Given the cap of 20,000 visas, it is advisable to confirm availability and book early, as the limit could be reached before the October 31 deadline.
What About the 5-Year Multiple-Entry Visa?
Separate from the limited-time free visa offer, the UAE offers a five-year multiple-entry tourist visa that is increasingly popular with frequent Indian travellers. This visa allows for repeated entries and a stay of up to 90 days per visit, which can be extended once per year to a total of 180 days. This is a self-sponsored visa, meaning you do not need a local host or sponsor. However, it has its own set of stringent financial requirements. Applicants must provide a bank statement for the previous six months showing a balance of at least USD 4,000 (or its currency equivalent). You will also need a passport with at least six months of validity, valid health insurance for the UAE, and a round-trip ticket.
Application Process: Portals and Pitfalls
For the five-year visa, applications can be submitted online through official government portals like the ICP Smart Services or the GDRFA website and app. You can also apply in person at Amer Centres. For the free visa offer, the travel agent handles the visa process for you. In both cases, precision is key. The most common reason for visa rejection is simple errors on the application form, such as misspelled names or incorrect passport numbers. Ensure your passport is machine-readable and not handwritten or damaged. The photo must be recent and on a plain white background, adhering to strict specifications. Any discrepancy between your application and your documents can lead to immediate refusal.
Verifying Costs and Avoiding Hidden Fees
While the promotional visa is free, applying for other types of visas involves clear costs. A standard 30-day UAE tourist visa can cost between ₹8,000 and ₹11,000, including service fees. The five-year multiple-entry visa involves a much larger upfront outlay. The total cost can be around AED 4,800 to AED 5,500, which includes government fees, service charges, mandatory health insurance, and a refundable security deposit of about AED 3,000. Always ask for a complete cost breakdown from your agent to avoid surprises. Be cautious of agents who offer suspiciously low prices, as they may be cutting corners or there could be hidden charges later.
