The Sticker Shock Holiday Season
Planning a winter getaway to popular spots like Goa, Kerala, or the mountains of Himachal has become a costly affair. Across major routes, airfares for the peak travel months of December and January have climbed significantly, with some reports indicating
sharp increases compared to the previous year. This surge is creating a new barrier for young, budget-conscious travellers who are finding that a simple round-trip ticket to a domestic destination can now consume a massive chunk of their entire holiday budget. The dream of a quick flight to a sunny beach or a snowy peak is being replaced by the reality of prohibitive costs, forcing a widespread rethink of what a winter vacation looks like.
Why Are Flights So Expensive?
Several factors are converging to drive up the cost of flying within India. Airlines have reportedly reduced the number of scheduled domestic flights for the winter quarter. While overall seat capacity hasn't plummeted, fewer flights mean fewer departure options, creating bottlenecks on popular routes during peak demand. Compounding this is the high price of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), which makes up around 40% of an airline's operating costs. When fuel prices rise, the additional expense is inevitably passed on to consumers in the form of higher ticket prices. This combination of constrained capacity and high operational costs, all happening during the festive season's demand surge, has created a perfect storm for expensive air travel.
The Pivot to Road, Rail, and Nearby Retreats
In response to the high airfares, a significant shift in travel patterns is emerging among young Indians. Instead of abandoning their holiday plans, they are creatively adapting. There is a renewed romance with India's extensive railway network, with scenic train journeys offering a more affordable and experiential way to travel. Journeys on routes like the Konkan Railway or the picturesque mountain railways are being seen not just as transport, but as part of the holiday itself. Road trips are also gaining immense popularity, giving groups of friends the flexibility to explore destinations at their own pace and split costs. This trend is also pushing travellers to discover destinations closer to home, with searches for non-urban and rural getaways increasing by over 30%, according to recent data from Airbnb.
Gen Z's Newfound Love for Cultural Hubs
Interestingly, the high cost of reaching traditional vacation spots seems to be broadening the horizons of the youngest generation of travellers. According to recent search data, Gen Z is driving a nearly 40% rise in domestic festive travel searches, with an unexpected destination topping their lists: Varanasi. This reflects a growing interest in spiritual and cultural centres that offer rich experiences without the premium price tag of a beach resort. Alongside Varanasi, cities like Kolkata are also seeing a surge in interest from young travellers. This indicates a move towards more meaningful travel, where the focus is on cultural immersion, local experiences, and discovering the diverse heritage within the country, often accessible via more affordable means like trains or buses.
Is An International Trip Now Cheaper?
The situation has led to a surprising calculation for some: a short international trip might now be more economical than a domestic one. When factoring in the soaring costs of flights to popular Indian destinations, some travellers are finding that packaged deals to nearby countries in Southeast Asia, such as Thailand or Vietnam, can be competitively priced. While a flight to Europe might still be a stretch, the rising disposable income of millennial travellers has made experience-led international journeys more accessible. For those with a slightly higher budget, the trade-off between a pricey domestic flight and an all-inclusive short-haul international holiday is becoming a serious consideration, turning the travel world upside down.
