A New Definition of Value
This festive season, urban consumers are redefining what 'value' means. It's no longer just about the deepest discount or the largest number of items in a shopping cart. Instead, there's a growing trend of 'premiumisation' taking hold across various categories.
Shoppers are increasingly willing to trade up for products that offer better quality, durability, and design. For instance, a YouGov report notes that as prices climb, shoppers are making harder choices about where their money goes, becoming more deliberate and strategic. This shift is visible in everything from smartphones, where devices priced above ₹30,000 are gaining significant traction, to home appliances and even fashion. This indicates a move towards investments in products that last well beyond the festive period, becoming a part of daily life.
The Subtle Squeeze of Inflation
While the desire for quality is a key driver, economic realities are also shaping behaviour. Rising inflation is a significant concern, putting pressure on household budgets. A recent survey from LocalCircles noted that total festive spending by urban households is estimated to see a slight drop this year, influenced by these inflationary pressures. With retail inflation climbing in September, many families are being more cautious. This doesn't mean they aren't spending, but they are being more selective. Many are focusing their spending on fewer categories, choosing to buy one excellent item rather than several average ones. This careful approach leads them to prioritize purchases that feel worthwhile, reinforcing the move toward quality.
The Rise of Mindful Consumption
A cultural shift towards conscious and mindful consumption is also playing a major role. A Hansa Research study found that an overwhelming 85% of consumers report making eco-friendly choices during their festive shopping. This includes avoiding plastic decorations, preferring sustainable packaging, and supporting local or handcrafted businesses. This mindset naturally extends to a 'less is more' philosophy. Rather than accumulating items, there's a growing interest in gifting experiences or purchasing goods with a story and a smaller environmental footprint. This trend suggests that for many, the joy of the festival is increasingly tied to responsible and thoughtful consumption, not just material acquisition.
From Metros to Tier-2 Towns
Interestingly, this focus on quality is not just a big-city phenomenon. The premiumisation trend is rapidly spreading to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Reports from e-commerce platforms like Amazon show that these smaller cities contribute significantly to the growth in demand for premium products, including smart home appliances and high-end wellness gadgets. While overall spending intent in some budget brackets might be higher in Tier-2 cities, the aspiration for better quality is a unifying trend across urban India. This demonstrates a broader evolution in consumer aspirations, driven by increased disposable incomes and exposure to global trends.
The Deliberate Shopper
Today's festive shopper is more informed and deliberate than ever before. Research is a key part of the buying process, with consumers comparing products, reading reviews, and seeking opinions before committing. On average, shoppers are planning to increase their spending in just 1.3 categories, showing a highly focused approach. While discounts remain a trigger for nearly half of consumers, a significant 38% state that convenience matters more than price. This indicates a split in the market between bargain hunters and those who will pay for a better product or a smoother shopping experience. This careful planning ensures that when they do spend, it's on items they truly value, reinforcing the quality-over-quantity ethos.
