What is a Vistadome Coach?
Introduced by Indian Railways to promote tourism, Vistadome coaches are specially designed carriages that offer an immersive travel experience. Their standout features are the large, panoramic windows and the transparent glass roofs, which provide an almost
360-degree view of the surrounding landscape. Inside, passengers are treated to comfort and luxury. The seats are wider, can rotate 180 degrees to always face the view, and offer ample legroom. These air-conditioned coaches also come equipped with modern amenities like Wi-Fi, a GPS-based information system, and an observation lounge for the best photo opportunities. First introduced in 2017 on the Visakhapatnam-Araku route, these coaches have become incredibly popular and are now available on several scenic routes across the country.
The Himalayan Toy Train: Kalka to Shimla
A journey on the Kalka-Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is like stepping back in time, and the Vistadome coach adds a modern twist to this historic ride. This narrow-gauge railway winds its way through the majestic Himalayas, covering a 96-kilometre stretch. The train, often called a 'toy train', moves at a leisurely pace, allowing passengers to soak in the breathtaking views of pine forests, deep valleys, and rugged mountain scenery. The journey is a marvel of engineering, passing through over 100 tunnels and across more than 800 bridges. The glass-roofed coach offers a spectacular, unobstructed view of the sky and the towering peaks, making this iconic journey even more memorable, especially during the winter months when the landscape is blanketed in snow.
Coastal Splendour: Mumbai to Goa
The train journey between Mumbai and Goa is renowned for its beauty, tracing the stunning Konkan Coast. Adding a Vistadome coach to trains like the Jan Shatabdi and Tejas Express has elevated this trip to another level. As the train travels through the Western Ghats, passengers are treated to a visual feast of lush greenery, cascading waterfalls (especially during the monsoon), and picturesque villages. The oversized windows and glass ceiling provide a front-row seat to the dramatic landscapes of the Sahyadri mountains on one side and the coastal plains on the other. It’s a day journey designed to make the travel itself a highlight of any trip to Goa.
Through the Eastern Ghats: Visakhapatnam to Araku Valley
The route that started it all, the journey from the coastal city of Visakhapatnam to the verdant Araku Valley, remains one of the most popular Vistadome experiences. As the train ascends the Eastern Ghats, the landscape transforms dramatically. The coach's panoramic windows offer stunning views of coffee plantations, dense forests, and numerous tunnels and bridges. The five-hour journey allows ample time to appreciate the region's natural beauty and tribal heartlands from the comfort of your rotating chair. The Vistadome coach on the Kirandul Express has made this route a must-do for tourists visiting Andhra Pradesh.
How to Book Your Vistadome Journey
Booking a seat in a Vistadome coach is a straightforward process, but requires some planning due to high demand. Tickets can be booked through the official IRCTC website or mobile app. When searching for your train, you need to select the correct class code, which is typically 'EV' for Executive Vistadome. It's advisable to book well in advance, as tickets often sell out quickly, especially during peak tourist seasons. The Advance Reservation Period (ARP) is generally 60 days. Remember that these coaches are attached to specific trains on select routes, so be sure to check the availability for your desired journey.
