Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
Often called Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, the Snake Plant is famous for being almost indestructible, making it a star choice for the monsoon. Its tall, architectural leaves are excellent at storing water, which means it tolerates the higher humidity of the rainy
season with ease. In fact, this period is often excellent for its growth. The key is to avoid overwatering, as the soil will naturally stay moist for longer. Water only when the soil is completely dry to the touch. It's not fussy about light and does well even in shadier corners of your home. As a bonus, it’s a NASA-recognised air purifier, great for keeping indoor air fresh when windows are closed against the rain.
Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum)
No Indian home feels complete without a Money Plant, or Pothos. This versatile vine is practically made for the monsoon. The increased humidity encourages faster growth, with its lovely heart-shaped leaves trailing beautifully from shelves and windowsills. It’s an incredibly forgiving plant that thrives in the indirect light common during overcast rainy days. One of the biggest mistakes with Money Plants is overwatering, especially during the monsoon when the air is already damp. Allow the top few inches of soil to dry out before watering again. It’s also incredibly easy to propagate; just snip a vine and place it in water to create new plants.
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)
The elegant Peace Lily, with its glossy dark leaves and iconic white 'flowers' (which are actually modified leaves called spathes), is another plant that enjoys monsoon conditions. It loves high humidity and can absorb excess moisture from the air, which helps prevent mould in damp indoor spaces. While it can tolerate low light, a spot with bright, indirect light will encourage it to bloom. Peace Lilies are quite communicative; if they're thirsty, their leaves will dramatically droop, perking up quickly after a good watering. During the rains, the soil stays moist longer, so be careful not to overwater.
ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
The ZZ Plant is the ultimate low-maintenance companion, perfect for busy or forgetful plant parents. Native to drought-prone areas of Africa, it is exceptionally hardy. Its glossy, dark green leaves and underground rhizomes store water, making it highly drought-tolerant and resilient to the occasional neglect. The ZZ Plant is perfectly happy in average to high humidity (thriving in a 40-60% range) and can adapt to low-light conditions, making it an excellent choice for indoor spaces during the monsoon. The main danger is overwatering, which can cause root rot. Ensure the soil is well-draining and dries out completely between waterings.
Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens)
For a touch of the tropics indoors, the Areca Palm is a fantastic choice. Its feathery, arching fronds bring an instant sense of lushness to a living room or corner. Areca Palms thrive in high humidity and are known to act as natural humidifiers themselves, adding moisture to the air. This makes the monsoon their happy season. They prefer bright, indirect light, so a spot near a window with filtered sun is ideal. They are sensitive to both overwatering and fluoridated tap water, so let the soil dry slightly between waterings and use filtered or rainwater if possible. With proper care, they are relatively low-maintenance and are also excellent air purifiers.
