The key takeaway is that most people sleep in rooms that are too warm. A hot room forces your body to work harder to cool down, which can disrupt sleep architecture, particularly the vital stages of slow-wave and REM sleep.
Finding Your Ideal Setting in India
Maintaining a sub-20°C bedroom might seem challenging, especially in India’s varied and often warm climate. However, the principle remains the same: create a cooler sleeping environment. In humid coastal cities or during hot summer months, air conditioning is the most effective tool. Try setting your AC to around 24-25°C, which is often a comfortable and energy-efficient starting point, and adjust from there. In drier or cooler regions, you have more options. A ceiling or portable fan is excellent for creating air movement, which helps your body's natural cooling process. On pleasant nights, simply cracking open a window can provide the necessary ventilation and temperature drop. Don't underestimate the power of a pre-sleep cool-down; running the AC or a fan for an hour before bed can make a significant difference.
Beyond the Thermostat: Bedding and Attire
The temperature of your room is only half the story. The microclimate you create under the covers is just as important. Your choice of bedding and sleepwear can either trap heat or help release it. Opt for natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen for your sheets and pyjamas. These materials are much better at wicking away moisture and allowing for air circulation than synthetic fabrics like polyester.
