The Official Green Light
Indian Railways has given the go-ahead for a new semi-high-speed Vande Bharat Express, which will operate as train numbers 26903/26904 between Surat and Udaipur City. According to a Railway Board letter dated August 31, 2026, the service will be managed
by the Western Railway zone. This move marks a significant development, providing Surat with its first Vande Bharat train and creating a much-anticipated premium link between South Gujarat and Southern Rajasthan. The introduction of this service also means the discontinuation of the existing Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat, effectively extending that route all the way to Surat.
Route, Stoppages, and Timings
The train will operate six days a week, taking a break on Tuesdays. For passengers starting in Surat, train 26903 is scheduled to depart at 6:10 AM and arrive in Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. The return journey, train 26904, will leave Udaipur at 3:35 PM and reach Surat at 11:00 PM. The service is planned with a rake of eight coaches and will make nine commercial stops along its path: Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar. This extensive list of stops ensures key towns in both states are well-connected.
A Leap in Travel Time and Comfort
The journey between Surat and Udaipur, covering a distance of approximately 690 km, is expected to take around 7 hours and 30 minutes. This presents a significant time-saving compared to other modes of transport. Vande Bharat trains are known for their modern amenities designed for passenger comfort. Travellers can expect ergonomically designed reclining seats, with revolving seats available in the executive class. The coaches are fully air-conditioned and feature automatic plug doors, large panoramic windows, and Wi-Fi-based infotainment systems. Mobile charging sockets for every seat and clean, modern bio-vacuum toilets are standard features that enhance the travel experience.
Onboard Experience and Safety
Beyond comfort, Vande Bharat trains are equipped with advanced safety features. These include the KAVACH anti-collision system, CCTV cameras in all coaches, and an aerosol-based fire detection and suppression system. A fully sealed gangway allows for safe and easy movement between coaches. For convenience, each train has a mini pantry to provide catering services during the journey. These semi-high-speed trains can reach operational speeds of up to 160 kmph, facilitated by their self-propelled engine-less design that allows for faster acceleration and deceleration.

This new connection is poised to deliver a substantial boost to both tourism and business. Udaipur, the 'City of Lakes', is a premier tourist destination, and a faster, more comfortable link from Gujarat's commercial capital is expected to increase footfall. Likewise, the direct route will facilitate smoother business travel between the industrial and textile hub of Surat and the growing economic centres in Rajasthan. Improved rail connectivity is a proven catalyst for regional economic growth, benefiting local businesses like hotels, restaurants, and transport providers by making destinations more accessible. While an official launch date has not yet been announced, there is speculation it could begin before the Navratri festival season to cater to festive travel demand.
