The End of an Era: Visa-Free Travel Halts
The most significant change for Indian passport holders is the end of the visa-free entry scheme that was in place from 2024. As of mid-2026, India has been moved back to the Visa on Arrival (VoA) category. This policy shift is part of a broader review
of immigration and security measures by Thai authorities. For travellers, this means that what was once a seamless entry now requires obtaining a visa upon landing and meeting a more comprehensive set of documentation requirements. Officials are conducting closer scrutiny at immigration, making it crucial to have every document in order.
Your Essential Airport Checklist
To avoid any issues at the immigration counter, ensure you have this complete set of documents, preferably in both physical and digital formats. A passport with at least six months of validity remaining from your date of arrival is non-negotiable. You will also need a confirmed return or onward flight ticket, proof of all your hotel bookings for the entire trip, and a clear travel itinerary. Furthermore, all foreign nationals must now complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 72 hours before arrival. Once submitted, you will receive a QR code that must be presented to immigration officials.
The Critical 'Proof of Funds' Requirement
One of the most strictly enforced rules is the requirement to show proof of sufficient funds. For travellers using the Visa on Arrival facility, you must be prepared to show at least 20,000 Thai Baht per person, which is approximately ₹58,000. It is critical to note that immigration officials may specifically request to see this amount in cash. While you can carry equivalent amounts in other major currencies like US Dollars or Euros, relying solely on credit cards or bank statements may not be sufficient and could lead to entry being denied. This measure is to ensure tourists can support themselves financially during their stay.
Navigating the Visa on Arrival (VoA) Process
Since visa-free entry has ended, most Indian tourists will use the Visa on Arrival service at major international airports like Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK) in Bangkok. Upon landing, head to the designated VoA counters. Here, you will need to submit a completed application form, your passport, one recent passport-sized photograph, and pay the visa fee of 2,000 Baht in cash. You must also present your confirmed return ticket, accommodation proof, and be ready to show your 20,000 Baht in cash if requested. Having all these documents organised will significantly speed up the process.
The New Digital Requirement: TDAC
Replacing the old paper-based TM6 form, the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is now a mandatory digital submission for all foreign nationals. You must fill this out on the official portal between 72 hours and 24 hours before your flight. The form requires your passport details, flight information, and the address of your accommodation in Thailand. Be wary of fake websites that charge a fee; the official TDAC submission is free. Starting in August 2026, the new THIM mobile app will become mandatory, integrating the TDAC for an even more streamlined process.
