A Vision for the Sunrise State
Andhra Pradesh is rolling out an ambitious blueprint to redefine its tourism sector, and recent gatherings in Visakhapatnam are central to this strategy. The state government, under its comprehensive Tourism Policy 2024-29, is aiming to attract over ₹20,000
crore in investments. The goal is to transform the state’s economy, with tourism as a major engine for growth and employment. Officials have granted the tourism sector official 'Industry Status', a crucial move that unlocks significant incentives like capital subsidies, SGST reimbursements, and stamp duty exemptions for investors. This financial encouragement is designed to attract global hospitality brands like Hilton, Marriott, and Hyatt, who are already preparing projects expected to add over 7,700 hotel rooms across the state.
Beyond Pilgrimages: Diversifying the Experience
For years, Andhra Pradesh's tourism has been heavily reliant on its world-famous pilgrimage sites. While spiritual tourism remains a vital component, the new vision aims to create a more diverse and compelling offering. The strategy involves developing seven anchor tourism hubs, including Visakhapatnam, Araku Valley, Gandikota, and Tirupati, connected by over 25 thematic circuits. The focus is on leveraging the state's largely untapped 974-kilometer coastline for beach and cruise tourism, developing the lush Eastern Ghats for eco-tourism, and showcasing unique heritage sites like the 12th-century Gandikota fort. By promoting everything from caravan and houseboat tourism to adventure sports and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events in key cities, the state hopes to encourage longer stays and attract a wider demographic of travellers.
Visakhapatnam: The Coastal Flagship
Visakhapatnam, or Vizag, is being positioned as the crown jewel of this revamped tourism strategy. The city is not only a hub for business and industry but also a gateway to numerous attractions. To enhance its appeal, it has been chosen to host major events like the 41st annual conference of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) in 2026. Such events bring key decision-makers to the city, allowing the state to showcase its potential firsthand. Plans are also underway to develop Vizag's beachfront with an eco-friendly shack policy and introduce new attractions. The government is also promoting the city as a major MICE destination, hoping to attract national and international corporate events.
Infrastructure and Innovation on the Agenda
A grand vision requires a solid foundation, and infrastructure development is a top priority. The state has set aggressive targets, including the development of 50,000 classified hotel rooms and the establishment of 10,000 homestays by 2029. To improve the visitor experience, a dedicated Tourist Police policy is being introduced to enhance safety and security at popular destinations. In a forward-looking move, Andhra Pradesh is also set to become India's first AI-powered tourism state. A new platform will allow tourists to scan QR codes at over 100 sites to receive information in more than 130 languages, making travel more interactive and accessible. This blend of physical infrastructure and digital innovation is key to competing on a global stage.
