The New Rule for Your Brew
The FSSAI has mandated that all packaged coffee products containing chicory must clearly state the exact percentage of both coffee and chicory on the front of the pack. This new directive requires manufacturers to use a clear format, for instance, “Coffee:
70%, Chicory: 30%,” on the Principal Display Panel (PDP). The rule, which comes into effect on July 1, 2027, is designed to end consumer confusion and ensure you know precisely what you are buying. This move follows feedback from the industry on an earlier proposal, resulting in a simplified declaration format and an extended deadline to ensure compliance.
Why is Chicory in Coffee Anyway?
The practice of blending chicory with coffee has a long history in India and around the world. Chicory is a plant whose roasted root can be ground and used as a coffee substitute or additive. Historically, it was added to make expensive coffee supplies last longer, a practice that became popular in India and particularly in the South Indian filter coffee tradition. Over time, many people grew to love the distinct flavour profile chicory provides. It adds a caramel-like sweetness, enhances the body and colour of the brew, and can reduce the bitterness of certain coffee beans. While some coffee purists see it as a filler, for many, the chicory blend is a beloved tradition.
From Vague Labels to Clear Percentages
Previously, while manufacturers had to mention that a product was a coffee-chicory mixture, the exact proportions were often not clearly disclosed. Regulations stipulated that any blend must contain at least 51% coffee, but the remaining 49% could be chicory without the consumer knowing the specific ratio. This lack of transparency made it difficult to compare brands or understand why one blend tasted different from another. The updated FSSAI rule closes this gap by moving from a simple mention to a mandatory, front-of-pack percentage declaration. This ensures the information is unmissable, empowering consumers at the point of purchase.
How to Read the New Labels
Starting July 2027, when you pick up a pack of blended coffee, your choice will be much clearer. Look directly at the front label for the declaration. The FSSAI has specified that the format will be straightforward, such as “COFFEE … %, CHICORY … %”. The regulator has even set minimum font sizes for this declaration based on the size of the packaging to ensure it is legible. This means you can instantly tell if you're holding a blend that is 90% coffee and 10% chicory or one that is closer to a 50/50 split. This simple change allows you to make decisions based on your personal preference for taste, strength, and budget.
A Win for Consumer Transparency
This updated regulation is part of a broader push by FSSAI to enhance transparency and build consumer trust in the food industry. By mandating clear declarations, the regulator aims to standardize labelling practices, promote fair competition among manufacturers, and ensure that consumers are not misled by ambiguous packaging. It recognizes that while chicory is a safe and traditional ingredient, transparency is paramount. The power is now shifting to the consumer, allowing everyone to know exactly what they are drinking, one cup at a time. This move ensures that whether you prefer pure coffee or a specific blend, your choice is an informed one.
