Gather Your Simple Toolkit
Before you begin, you’ll need a few basic items. First, acquire your fresh marigold garlands; the amount will depend on the size of your desired backdrop. You will also need a method for hanging them. For a damage-free approach, self-adhesive wall hooks
are an excellent choice, available in various sizes to support different weights. Alternatively, you can use small nails or a pre-existing curtain rod. You'll also want some strong thread or clear fishing line, and a pair of scissors. For more structured designs, a simple wooden dowel or a wire mesh grid can serve as a sturdy base.
Prepare Your Space and Garlands
Choose a wall in your living room that will serve as the backdrop. A plain, light-coloured wall often works best to make the flowers pop. Measure the height and width you want to cover. Once you bring your garlands home, it's important to let them breathe. Remove them from any tight plastic packaging, which can trap heat and moisture, causing the petals to wilt. Gently lay them out in a cool, shaded area before you begin arranging. Check their freshness and ensure the threads are secure.
The Classic Waterfall Design
The simplest yet most elegant design is a vertical 'waterfall' of garlands. Start by placing your adhesive hooks or nails in a straight line at your desired height, spaced about four to six inches apart. Cut your garlands to a uniform length, or vary the lengths for a more dynamic look. Simply loop the top of each garland string over a hook. For a fuller appearance, you can hang two garlands on each hook. This classic method creates a dense, colourful wall of flowers that serves as a perfect photo background.
Creating Elegant Swags and Drapes
For a softer, more romantic look, try draping the garlands in swags. Place your hooks further apart, perhaps one at each end of your desired backdrop area and one or two in the middle. Instead of hanging the garlands straight down, drape them from one hook to the next, allowing the middle to sag into a gentle 'U' shape. You can create a single, dramatic swag or layer multiple rows at different heights. This technique works beautifully over a sofa or a console table, framing the space with colour and texture.
Add Creative and Personal Touches
Once your base is in place, feel free to add other elements. Weaving in garlands of mango leaves adds a traditional and fragrant touch. For a bit of evening sparkle, intertwine battery-operated fairy lights among the flowers. You can also mix in garlands of other flowers, such as white jasmine or tube-rose, to create contrast and texture. Some people even attach single, larger flowers or small decorative bells to the ends of the garlands for added detail. The goal is to make the backdrop uniquely yours.
Keeping Your Backdrop Fresh and Vibrant
Fresh flower garlands have a limited lifespan, but with a little care, you can maximize their beauty. They will typically look their best for about 48 to 72 hours. To keep them looking vibrant, lightly mist the flowers with water using a spray bottle once or twice a day. Avoid drenching them, as too much water can cause brown spots. Keep the room cool and away from direct sunlight or heat sources like diyas, which can cause them to wilt quickly. If you prepare the backdrop a day in advance, storing the garlands in a cool place until you hang them can help prolong their freshness.
