It was often inefficient and overwhelming, but it taught a fundamental skill: how to navigate a vast ocean of information and find what you need.

Today, that entire process is being upended by AI. Tools like Perplexity, Gemini, and even Google's own AI Overviews operate on a different principle. Instead of providing a list of links for the user to investigate, they aim to provide a direct, synthesized answer. A student can now ask a complex question in natural language, such as "What were the primary economic drivers of the Gupta Empire?" and receive a concise, paragraph-style response that pulls information from various sources. These AI tools act less like a library index and more like a research assistant that has already done the initial reading for you.
The Allure of Instant Efficiency
The benefits for students are immediately obvious. The top use for AI among students is now information retrieval and research. These tools can dramatically cut down the time spent on gathering information, allowing for a quicker start on writing and analysis. They are excellent for brainstorming, generating outlines, and explaining complex concepts in simple terms. Some AI search platforms are specifically designed for academic work, with features that help filter for peer-reviewed papers and automatically generate citations, streamlining what was once a tedious part of the research process. Recent surveys show that a vast majority of students, over 80% in many cases, are now regularly using these tools for their schoolwork.
A New Kind of Digital Literacy
However, this convenience comes with significant new challenges. The primary concern among educators is the risk of so-called AI "hallucinations," where the model confidently presents incorrect information. Because the AI-generated text is often so well-written and plausible, students may accept it without question. Furthermore, even when the information is correct, there is a danger of "cognitive offloading." The traditional research process, while messy, forced students to engage in critical thinking, source evaluation, and synthesis. If an AI does all the summarising upfront, students may bypass this crucial learning process altogether, treating the AI's output as a finished product rather than a starting point.
Educators Adapt to a New Reality
Rather than outright banning these tools, educational institutions are scrambling to adapt. The focus is shifting from trying to prevent AI use to teaching students how to use it responsibly and effectively. This involves fostering a new kind of digital literacy, one that teaches students to be critical of AI-generated content, to always check the primary sources cited by the AI, and to understand that these tools are collaborators, not replacements for their own thinking. Many educators now see their role as helping students learn to prompt AI effectively, evaluate its output critically, and integrate its capabilities into a workflow that preserves human agency and academic integrity.
