of it as giving immigration authorities a heads-up that you're coming. This requirement became mandatory for all foreign visitors from January 1, 2024. The best part? Submitting the form through the official government portal is completely free.
Visa-Free Entry vs. The MDAC
This is where many travellers get confused. Malaysia currently offers 30-day visa-free entry for Indian citizens, a policy extended until December 31, 2026. However, visa-free does not mean document-free. The MDAC is a separate and compulsory requirement for all travellers, including those entering under the visa-exemption scheme. In simple terms, while you don't need to apply for a visa for a short tourist trip, you absolutely must complete the MDAC before you fly.
How and When to Apply
The process is straightforward and entirely online. You must fill out and submit the MDAC within the three days leading up to your arrival in Malaysia. For instance, if you are scheduled to arrive on a Friday, you can submit your form on the preceding Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday itself before you land. The official portal to do this is managed by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. You will need to provide basic personal information, passport details, travel dates, mode of transport, and your accommodation address in Malaysia. Once submitted, you’ll receive a confirmation. While it's electronically linked to your passport, it's wise to keep a digital copy or screenshot on your phone.
Documents to Keep Handy for Arrival
While the MDAC is digital, immigration officers at the point of entry will still expect you to have several key documents ready for inspection to ensure a smooth clearance. In addition to your submitted MDAC, make sure you have your passport with at least six months of validity. You must also carry proof of a confirmed return or onward flight ticket showing your departure within 30 days. Furthermore, be prepared to show proof of accommodation, such as hotel bookings, and evidence of sufficient funds for your stay, which is often cited as around $50 USD per day.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
The most common issue for Indian travellers has been the incorrect assumption that visa-free travel exempts them from the MDAC requirement. Another mistake is using third-party websites that may charge a fee; always use the official immigration portal which is free. Also, ensure all the information you enter, especially your name, passport number, and travel dates, is accurate and matches your documents perfectly to avoid any processing delays or issues at the immigration counter. Filling out the form too early (more than three days before arrival) or forgetting to do it altogether can cause unnecessary stress when you land.
