The Great Foundation Shift
For years, the anchor of many makeup bags was a bottle of heavy, high-coverage foundation. The goal was to create a perfectly uniform, poreless canvas, an ideal popularised in the age of static Instagram photos. But that grip has loosened. Today’s urban
Gen Z is moving away from the 'mask' and embracing a look that lets their real skin—texture, freckles, and all—show through. This isn’t to say foundation is obsolete, but its role is changing. Full coverage is now often reserved for special occasions, not daily wear. The new everyday ideal is about looking healthy, hydrated, and, most importantly, authentic.
What 'Skin-First' Really Means
At its core, the skin-first approach is about prioritising the health and condition of your skin over concealing it. It’s a philosophy that sees makeup as a way to enhance, not hide. This trend is driven by a surge in 'skinimalism' and the influence of K-beauty, which champions a dewy, luminous, 'glass skin' glow. The focus is on hydration, nourishment, and creating a healthy canvas that looks good on its own. Gen Z consumers are more ingredient-savvy than ever, looking for actives like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and ceramides in their products. The goal is no longer to just look good, but to actively do good for your skin with every product you apply.
Meet the New Hybrid Heroes
This movement has given rise to a new category of 'hybrid' products that blur the lines between skincare and makeup. The stars of the minimalist routine are lightweight formulas that offer multiple benefits. Skin tints and tinted moisturisers provide sheer coverage while evening out the complexion. Serum foundations are packed with active ingredients that hydrate and improve skin over time. And tinted sunscreens have become non-negotiable, offering essential protection with a hint of coverage, making them perfect for India’s urban climate. These products are designed to be applied quickly, often with just your fingers, and feel breathable and comfortable all day.
Why Gen Z Is Driving This Change
Gen Z's preference for this trend is rooted in a broader cultural shift towards authenticity, wellness, and transparency. This generation values genuine self-expression over the curated perfection of the past. They are drawn to brands that are transparent about their ingredients and avoid retouching campaign images. The move to video-first platforms like TikTok also played a role; heavy makeup that looked great in a still photo often appeared unnatural in motion and daylight. Furthermore, there is a practical element. For a busy, on-the-go lifestyle in a warm, humid climate, a lighter, more breathable base is simply more comfortable and requires fewer touch-ups.
How to Adopt a Minimalist Routine
Transitioning to a skin-first approach starts before you even think about makeup. The first step is a consistent skincare routine focused on cleansing, hydrating, and sun protection to create a healthy base. When it comes to makeup, think in terms of multitasking products. Start with a hydrating primer or a tinted SPF to even out your skin tone. Instead of a full face of foundation, use a concealer just where you need it—around the nose or under the eyes. Finish with a cream blush or a multi-use lip and cheek tint to add a natural flush of colour. The idea is to feel polished and confident, not covered up.
