A New Artery of Commerce and Culture
The Railway Board has approved a new Vande Bharat Express train connecting Surat, Gujarat's bustling diamond and textile hub, with Udaipur, the historic 'City of Lakes' in Rajasthan. This move marks a significant step in strengthening the transport infrastructure
between the two states, offering a faster, more comfortable, and convenient travel option for passengers. The service is expected to give a substantial boost to trade, tourism, and social ties by directly linking South Gujarat with Southern Rajasthan. The new train is Surat's first Vande Bharat service, a development hailed as a major gift for the entire South Gujarat region.
Tracing the Route: Surat to Udaipur
The new service, designated as train numbers 26903/26904, will be operated by the Western Railway and run six days a week, excluding Tuesdays. The journey will cover a distance of approximately 690 kilometres in about seven and a half hours, a significant time saving for travellers. The train will depart from Surat at 6:10 AM, reaching Udaipur City at 1:40 PM. For the return journey, it will leave Udaipur at 3:35 PM and arrive back in Surat at 11:00 PM. The route includes nine strategic stops at key commercial and transit points, including Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Maninagar, Asarva, Himmatnagar, Shamlaji Road, Dungarpur, and Zawar, ensuring comprehensive connectivity along the corridor.
Boosting Tourism and Business
The introduction of this Vande Bharat train is poised to be a game-changer for the tourism sectors in both states. Udaipur, with its magnificent palaces and lakes, will become more accessible for tourists from Gujarat's commercial heartland. Likewise, business travel is set to become far more efficient. Professionals from Surat can now potentially make a same-day return trip to the Udaipur region, enhancing productivity and fostering stronger business relationships. The Vande Bharat trains are known for boosting local economies by increasing footfall for hotels, restaurants, and other businesses along their routes, and this new connection is expected to do the same.
An Upgraded Travel Experience
Like other trains in the Vande Bharat fleet, the Surat-Udaipur service will feature an eight-car composition with modern amenities. These semi-high-speed trains can reach a maximum operational speed of 160 kmph, offering a superior travel experience with features like large windows, comfortable seating, on-board Wi-Fi, and quality catering. The new route effectively extends and replaces the previous Udaipur City-Asarva Vande Bharat Express, providing a much longer direct link between the two states. The primary maintenance for the rake will be done at Surat, underscoring the city's new role as a hub for this premium service.
