The First United Farewell
Ronaldo’s initial departure from Manchester United in 2009 for a world-record fee was, on the surface, the fulfillment of a dream to play for Real Madrid. Yet, the groundwork was laid a year prior with a public desire to leave that manager Sir Alex Ferguson
had to firmly shut down. Ferguson convinced him to stay for one more season, promising to let him go if a record fee arrived. While not overtly bitter, it established a theme: once Ronaldo decides he wants a new challenge, he makes his intentions clear, creating tension until he gets his move. He later stated that after winning the Champions League in 2008, he felt there was nothing more to achieve at the club.
An Unexpected Madrid Divorce
His 2018 exit from Real Madrid, where he became a club legend, was far more shocking. Fresh off a third consecutive Champions League title, Ronaldo left for Juventus. He later revealed he felt the club, and particularly president Florentino Perez, no longer considered him 'indispensable'. Issues over a new contract and feeling undervalued compared to rivals like Lionel Messi were significant factors. The departure was sudden, leaving no time for a proper send-off for a player who had scored an incredible 450 goals for the club, signalling a breakdown in his relationship with the club's hierarchy.
The Juventus Disappointment
The move to Juventus was meant to bring the Italian giants the Champions League trophy that had eluded them. It never happened. After three years, with the team's domestic dominance ending and criticism mounting over his tactical fit and high wages, another exit loomed. Some former Juventus players felt Ronaldo had destroyed the team's balance. His departure in August 2021 was swift. He informed manager Massimiliano Allegri he had no intention of playing for the club again, cleared out his locker, and left just before the transfer window closed, with some former players criticising the lack of respect shown to the club.
The Explosive Old Trafford Implosion
Ronaldo's return to Manchester United was a fairytale that ended in a firestorm. The relationship with new manager Erik ten Hag frayed publicly, culminating in Ronaldo refusing to come on as a substitute and leaving a match before the final whistle. The final straw was a sensational, unauthorised interview with Piers Morgan in November 2022. In it, Ronaldo claimed he felt 'betrayed' and criticised the manager, the club's owners, and its lack of progress since the Ferguson era. The interview was so damaging that his contract was terminated by mutual consent shortly after.
Trouble With The National Team
Even his decorated international career with Portugal has not been immune to public fallout. During the 2022 World Cup, he was controversially benched for the knockout stages. More recently, in the autumn of 2026, a major dispute with the national team coach erupted after Ronaldo was again benched for key matches. He claimed the coach had broken promises and abruptly left the training camp, leading the Portuguese Football Federation to open disciplinary proceedings against him. It was another chapter where his role within the team became a source of public conflict.
