What is an Indian E-Visa?
An Indian e-visa is an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) that allows citizens of eligible countries to visit India without needing a traditional paper visa stamped in their passport before travel. Instead, you apply online, and upon approval, you receive
the ETA via email. You then present a printout of this document to immigration officers upon arrival in India, where your visa will be stamped into your passport. This system, first introduced in 2014, has simplified the process for millions of travellers, with the government noting that e-visas now account for a majority of visas issued. It's designed for specific purposes like tourism, short-term business, medical treatment, and conferences.
Recent Expansion: More Ways to Enter
In a significant update for travellers in 2026, India has expanded the number of entry points that accept e-visas. The network now includes 88 approved locations, comprising 37 airports, 38 seaports, and 13 land ports. This expansion is a game-changer, especially for those who prefer to enter via land or sea. Recently added airports include Bhopal and Tirupati, providing better access to central and southern India. The addition of land crossings like Attari (road), Jaigaon, and Moreh also creates more flexible itineraries for those travelling from neighbouring countries. This wider network aims to distribute tourist traffic beyond major hubs like Delhi and Mumbai, opening up new regional destinations.
Who is Eligible to Apply?
The e-visa facility is available to citizens of over 170 countries. The list of eligible nations is extensive and includes the USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Singapore, Germany, France, and many more. However, it's crucial to verify your nationality's eligibility on the official government portal before starting an application. The e-visa is not available to holders of Diplomatic or Official passports. Additionally, international travellers with a Pakistani passport or of Pakistani origin are generally advised to apply for a regular visa at an Indian Mission. Each individual, including children, must have their own separate passport to apply for an e-visa.
Understanding the E-Visa Categories
India offers several sub-categories of e-visas based on the purpose of your visit. The main types are: e-Tourist Visa: Available for 30 days (double entry), one year (multiple entries), or five years (multiple entries). The one-year and five-year visas have limits on the duration of continuous stay. e-Business Visa: Typically valid for one year with multiple entries, intended for business-related activities. A continuous stay of more than 180 days requires registration with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). e-Medical Visa & e-Medical Attendant Visa: For patients seeking medical treatment in India and for up to two attendants accompanying them. e-Conference Visa: For attending conferences organized by government bodies.
How to Apply: A Step-by-Step Guide
The entire application is done online and is straightforward if you follow the steps carefully. 1. Visit the Official Portal: The only legitimate website is indianvisaonline.gov.in. Be wary of fake or intermediary websites that may charge extra fees. 2. Complete the Application Form: Fill in your personal details, passport information, and travel itinerary accurately. 3. Upload Documents: You will need a scanned copy of your passport's bio page and a recent front-facing photograph with a white background. The photo requirements are strict, so ensure your picture is clear and meets the specifications to avoid rejection. 4. Pay the Fee Online: Fees vary by nationality and visa type, ranging from $10 to over $200. Payment can be made using a credit card, debit card, or payment wallet. A bank transaction charge of 2.5% is typically added. 5. Receive Your ETA: After processing, which often takes 3-4 working days, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) will be sent to your email. 6. Print and Carry: Print a copy of the ETA. You must present it at the immigration counter upon arrival in India.
Key Things to Remember
To ensure a hassle-free process, keep these tips in mind. Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of arrival and have at least two blank pages for stamps. You can apply up to 120 days in advance of your travel date, so it's best to apply early to allow for any potential delays. Always double-check that your arrival airport, seaport, or land border is on the list of designated e-visa entry points. Finally, carry a copy of your approved ETA with you at all times during your travels in India.
