For frequent train travellers in India, the side berth is a familiar compromise. A new coach design, highlighted in a viral travel video, might just solve one of its most persistent problems, promising a more comfortable sleep for passengers.
The Age-Old Side Berth Problem
Anyone who
has travelled in a sleeper or a three-tier AC coach knows the unique challenges of the side lower and side upper berths. During the day, the side lower berth functions as a seating area for two passengers. At night, these two seats are converted into a single sleeping berth. However, this conversion often leaves an uncomfortable gap right down the middle, exactly where a passenger's back or hip would rest. This uneven surface has been a long-standing complaint, forcing many to use extra clothing or blankets to pad the gap for a semblance of a flat sleeping area. This small but significant design flaw can be the difference between a restful overnight journey and a night spent tossing and turning.
A Simple Yet Effective Redesign
A recently surfaced video, which has captured the attention of netizens, showcases an ingenious solution to this very problem. The feature appears in the newer AC three-tier economy coaches being rolled out by Indian Railways. The redesign addresses the uncomfortable gap by incorporating a foldable flap. When the two seats are converted into a bed, this additional cushioned panel flips over to seamlessly cover the gap, creating a single, continuous surface for the passenger to sleep on. This eliminates the awkward division and provides a uniformly flat and much more comfortable berth. While a seemingly minor adjustment, it represents a significant improvement in passenger comfort.
More Than Just a Flat Surface
The innovation doesn't stop at just bridging the gap. The new design also includes a foldable snack table for the side berth passenger. In the traditional layout, side berth occupants lacked a dedicated table, unlike their counterparts in the main bay. The new layout provides a small, convenient table that can be used for meals, drinks, or placing a laptop or book. This adds another layer of convenience, making the side berth experience more comparable to the main berths. These AC three-tier economy coaches also come equipped with other modern amenities, such as individual AC vents, personalised reading lights, and USB charging points for each berth.
Is This Coming to a Train Near You?
The good news is that this isn't just a prototype. This new design is a feature of the AC three-tier economy coaches, which Indian Railways first introduced in 2021. These coaches were designed to offer AC travel at a more affordable price point, with a higher passenger capacity of 83 berths compared to the traditional 72. The space was created by moving some electrical equipment below the coach's underframe. While not yet available on every train, these economy coaches are being steadily added to various long-distance express routes across the country. As Indian Railways continues its push to modernise its fleet and upgrade passenger amenities, it is likely that this thoughtful design will become a more common sight, much to the relief of future travellers.
