The University Grants Commission (UGC) and other government bodies now use a centralised system for scholarship applications known as the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The core of this new system is the One-Time Registration, or OTR. This is a permanent,
lifelong profile for each student, identified by a unique 14-digit number. Think of it as a digital master key for all your future scholarship applications. The goal is to move away from repetitive yearly registrations and create a more streamlined, transparent, and user-friendly process for millions of students across the country. Once your profile is made, it remains valid throughout your entire academic career, from school to post-graduation.
A Mandatory First Step
This is not an optional update; completing the OTR is now compulsory for every student seeking scholarships through the NSP. Without a valid OTR ID, the portal will not allow you to proceed with a scholarship application. This applies to a vast range of central and state-level schemes, including all major scholarships managed by the UGC. The system ensures that each student has a single, verified profile, which helps prevent fraudulent or duplicate applications and simplifies the verification process for both students and institutions. For students, it means the hassle of filling out the same basic information year after year is eliminated, allowing you to focus on the specifics of the scholarships you are applying for.
Your OTR Registration Checklist
Before you begin the registration process, gathering a few key items will make the experience much smoother. You will absolutely need an active mobile number, as it will be used for verification via a one-time password (OTP). The most critical document is your Aadhaar card. If you have recently applied and are waiting for your card, your Aadhaar Enrolment ID (EID) can be used instead, though you will need to update your Aadhaar number later. For minor students who do not have an Aadhaar card, a parent's or legal guardian's Aadhaar can be used for registration, but this is limited to two children per guardian. Finally, ensure your bank account is linked with your Aadhaar (a status known as NPCI mapping) to facilitate the direct transfer of scholarship funds once approved.
How to Create Your Profile
Creating your OTR profile requires an Android smartphone, as the process involves mobile-app-based authentication. First, visit the official National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in and navigate to the student registration section. You will be prompted to download two essential apps from the Google Play Store: 'NSP OTR' and 'AadhaarFaceRD'. Using the NSP OTR app, you will begin by verifying your mobile number. Following this, the app will guide you through the Aadhaar eKYC process. A crucial step is the live face authentication, which uses your phone's camera and the AadhaarFaceRD app to securely match your face with the photograph on your Aadhaar card. Upon successful verification, you will be issued a reference number and can create a password to complete your profile.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
To ensure a smooth process, be mindful of common pitfalls. The most significant rule is to never create more than one OTR profile. Having duplicate IDs can lead to your applications being rejected and potential debarment from future scholarships. Another frequent issue arises during face authentication if your biometrics are locked in your Aadhaar settings. Before you start, visit the MyAadhaar portal to ensure your biometrics are unlocked for authentication. Also, meticulously check that all personal details you enter—especially your name, date of birth, and gender—are identical to what is printed on your Aadhaar card to avoid verification failures. Finally, remember that generating an OTR ID is only the registration step; you must still log in and formally apply for specific scholarships once their application windows open.
